After five meets in the last six weeks, South Florida Aquatic Club head coach Michael Lohberg said “now it’s time to take a break and take a breath.”
SOFLO’s eight All-Star swimmers that represented the Florida Gold Coast during the week-long USA Swimming Southern Zone Age Group Championships, will now get a much-deserved two to three week break to recharge their batteries before getting ready for the fall season.
Swimming more for fun than time in his last race of the summer, Luke Torres was SOFLO’s top finisher on Saturday night.
On the fifth and final night of the pool events at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Torres, 16, finished tenth in the 15-18 200-meter butterfly in 2:13.18. Torres was seeded ninth after swimming 2:11.89 in prelims.
With only the open water events remaining on Sunday at the Lake Lanier Olympic Canoe, Kayak and Rowing venue in Gainesville, Ga., the Florida Gold Coast All-Star team was in fourth place with 279 points.
Florida Swimming was leading the Georgia Zone Team, 449.5-441. North Carolina Swimming is third with 357 points.
The open water event distances are 2-miles for 15-18, 1.5 miles for 13-14 and one mile for 11-12.
Also on Saturday night, four other SOFLO swimmers—Stephanie Campo, Brandon Goldman, Marco Hosfeld and Diego Rodriguez–turned in career-best times to finish a successful summer season.
“I think the meet was worthwhile especially for the people who were prepared for it,” Lohberg said. “We had in the last six weeks five meets. That was a very full schedule.
“Luke swam four big meets in a row and the gas tank is empty now which is perfectly fine,” Lohberg said. “The last three months he dropped three seconds in the 100 fly. He had quite a remarkable season. Now it’s time to take a break.”
For the SOFLO All-Stars, the trip was worthwhile and a good experience, Lohberg said.
“It was a little disappointing to see not all the Florida Gold Coast teams support this meet,” Lohberg said. “It was worth it for us. It was a nice trip for the kids at the end of the season.
“I do think if the Florida Gold Coast sends people to this meet they need to be prepared or they shouldn’t go,” Lohberg said. “It’s an honor and we want to be at our best at this meet. Overall, I am happy with the way it turned out for us. It turned out much better than I thought. I thought our kids would struggle a little, but they did a real nice job.”
