SOFLO Dominates Final Day Action At Florida Gold Coast South Division II Meet

MIAMI—Roger Capote was a double winner in final day action at the Florida Gold Coast South Division Meet at the Metro Aquatic Club of Miami’s Tamiami Aquatic Center.

Capote, 14, won the 13-14 200-meter individual medley in a Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympic cut and career-best time of 2:40.14. His previous best time was 2:44.71.

Capote also won the 50-meter breaststroke in 37.34, his first long swim in the event. His short course best time and seed time was 34.64.

Alani Carrasco, 11, won the girls 11-12 200-meter individual medley in 3:03.13. Her previous best was 3:04.93. She was also second in the 1500-meter freestyle in 22:29.67.

Natalia Valderrama, 11, won the 11-12 50-meter breaststroke in 43.58, a FGCJO cut time and career best. She swam 45.42 in prelims, trimming her previous career-best of 47.41.

Maria Rodriguez, 14, won the 13-14 100-meter freestyle in a career-best 1:09.62. Her previous best was 1:10.15.

In the boys’ 15-18 200-meter butterfly, Darryl Perez, 15, and Xavier Brown finished 1-2. Perez finished first in 2:44.55 and Brown was second in a career-best 2:53.96.

In the final day of relay competition, SOFLO picked up three wins.

SOFLO swept the girls and boys 11-12 200-meter freestyle relays. The girls’ team of Alani Carrasco, Stephanie Mlujeak, Maya Hirian and Lilli Calero won in 2:27.05. SOFLO also finished second in the event in 2:33.27.

The boys 200 free relay of Santiago Arango, Rodrigo Rodriguez, Miguel Hernandez and Sherard Huggins won in 2:36.34.

The girls 13-14 400-meter freestyle relay of Gabriella Fawaz, Leysha Caraballo, Maria Rodriguez and Shannon Hedmann won in 5:09.09. SOFLO was also third in the event.

SOFLO’s boys 13-14 400 meter freestyle relay was second in 4:40.94.

50-meter backstroke: 11-12, 2. Maya Hirian, 11, 40.34; 4. Jessie Cordero, 12, 40.39, career-best; 6. Emily Neville, 12, 41.62.

50-meter breaststroke: 10-and-under, 6. Katherine De Barros, 9, 53.61; 11-12, 5. Alani Carrasco, 11, 45.97, career-best; 13-14, 8. Vivi Calero, 13, 47.61.

100-meter freestyle: 10-and-under, 6. Vanessa Mesa, 8, 1:25.06; 7. Caitlin Coote, 10, 1:25.44, career-best; 11-12, 6. Stephanie Mlujeak, 11, 1:16.96, career-best; 7. Jessie Cordero, 12, 1:17.33, 8. Natasha Testa, 11, 1:18.31; 13-14, 3. Gabriella Fawaz, 14, 1:09.95.
