The South Florida Aquatic Club continued to make Florida Gold Coast history.

The newly-formed club topped a field of more than 1,200 swimmers to win its first Speedo Winter Championships Sunday night at the Plantation Central Park Aquatic Complex.

SOFLO won the combined team title with 1,662 points to edge two-time defending champion Fort Lauderdale Aquatics with 1,507. Davie Nadadores was third with 1,273.50.

SOFLO was second among girls’ teams (972.50) and third among boys’ teams (689.50).

SOFLO, just seven months old, is the youngest club ever to win the Winter Championships. The trophy will join the 14-and-under Junior Olympics Long Course Championship and Senior Championships trophies SOFLO walked off with this past summer.

SOFLO’s depth and talent, particularly with the 14-and-under swimmers, was never more evident during the three-day meet.

“Our 14-and-unders pretty much carried the team,” said SOFLO head age group coach Bruno Darzi.

“We didn’t expect to win this meet because we have a few senior kids preparing for nationals and other kids who didn’t swim. We didn’t come with everybody so this is a nice surprise for them. It was great to see. It gets us excited about the future.”

So many young swimmers stepped up for SOFLO.

One example was 11-year-old Tristan Celestin, who started swimming just two years ago and has diligently been working hard with Coach Dave Cowmeadow. The hard work paid off. On Sunday, Celestin won the 11-12 50-yard breaststroke in a best time of 30.99 after going 31.06 in prelims.

Celestin also anchored the winning boys’ 11-12 200-yard freestyle relay with Cristian Rossi, Juan Lucas and Alfredo Mesa Jr. that won in 1:44.69.  Its’ “B” relay of Ryan Capote, Alexander Viloria, Carlos Rodriguez and Gustavo Valery was fifth in 1:50.25.

There were also familiar faces among top finishers.

Tyla Martin, who competes internationally for Trinidad and Tobago, won the 13-14 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.09 and was third in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.85. Martin was also a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay along with Mia Fiorenzi, Kristina Brennan and Emma Lincoln that won in 8:02.40.

Allison Kopas, one of three swimming sisters, won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:25.23, finished third in the 11-12 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.12 and fourth in the 50-yard backstroke in 30.88.

Catharine Cooper, who started in Swim America, won the 10-and-under 100-yard freestyle in 59.58 and was second in the 10-and-under 50-yard backstroke in 34.27.

Lindsey McKnight, preparing for nationals, swam several off events including the 15-16 50-yard backstroke in which she finished second in 27.45. Charlotte Hartung was also second in the open 50-yard backstroke in 27.44

Samantha Stinemire was third in the 11-12 50-yard backstroke in 29.86 and Maria Lopez was third in the 13-14 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.72.

SOFLO’s 11-12 girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Samantha Stinemire, Audrey Mason, Sophia Bucaro and Allison Kopas was second in 1:50.94.

Blake Kelley won the 13-14 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:29.44 to highlight SOFLO’s boys’ performances.

Other top SOFLO boy finishers were Alex Rodriguez, second in the open 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.88. Gustavo Valery was second in the 11-12 50-yard backstroke in 30.14. Carlos Rodriguez was second in the 11-12 200-yard butterfly in 2:29.30 and Blake Kelley was second in the 13-14 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.85. Jorge Depassier was third in the 10-and-under 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.16.
