Coral Springs Hosts Final Meet Of 2010 This Weekend

The Broward County Sprint Championships will give swimmers of all ages another chance at racing in the final Florida Gold Coast meet of 2010 this weekend at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Swimmers from the South Florida Aquatic Club, Comets Swim Team and Coral Springs Swim Club head the large field for the “fun meet” according to host coach Michael Lohberg.

The unique meet, that features only 50- and 100-yard events, begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and concludes Sunday. All events are timed finals.

On Saturday events are the 50-yard breaststroke and 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. On Sunday the events are 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.

Young swimmers will get to rub elbows with elite swimmers including two-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, recently nominated for Sportswoman of the Year in Jamaica. Atkinson is tuning up for next week’s world short course championships in Dubai.

SOFLO’s McKnight Swims Career-Best On Day 2 Of Speedo Junior Nationals

Lindsey McKnight swam a career-best time in the 100-yard butterfly Friday night at the Speedo Short Course Junior National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

McKnight, 16, of the South Florida Aquatic Club, swam 54.86 in morning prelims of the butterfly event and qualified tenth. Her splits were 25.50 and 29.36.

McKnight’s previous best in the butterfly was 55.31. She placed tenth in the championship final in 55.13. Rachel Moore, 16, of Crimson Aquatics won the event in 53.32.

In the 200-yard freestyle, McKnight came back to finish third in 1:48.08, faster than her prelim time of 1:48.52. Her seed time was 1:46.18. Quinn Carrozza, 14, of Longhorn Aquatics won the event in 1:46.64.

McKnight is competing despite a broken toe suffered during the Florida Gold Coast Winter Championships.

In other events, Lauren Driscoll of Fort Lauderdale Aquatics finished second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:11.08, a meet record. Tan Kylliainen, 17, of Loyola Blakefield won in 4:09.66, also a meet record. The previous record was 4:11.36. Clara Smiddy, 14, of AK Sharks was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.32.

Pine Crest’s relay of Gotti Eisenberger, Marcel Betschart, Austin Saunders and Thomas Veale was eighth in the men’s 4×200-yard freestyle relay in 6:46.56. Dynamo won in a meet record 6:38.56.

The three-day meet concludes on Saturday night. McKnight is seeded first in the 100-yard freestyle.
