SOFLO’s Tristan Celestin Breaks Own Club Record On Day One Of County Sprint Championships

Tristan Celestin has done his homework in and out of the pool.

After only two years in the sport, the South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer is already breaking club records.

On Day One of the Broward County Sprint Championships at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex, Celestin, 11, broke his own club record in the 11-12 50-yard breaststroke in 30.50. His closest competition, SOFLO teammate Cristian Rossi, was a distant second in 36.24.

Celestin’s previous best time and club record was 30.99 at the Florida Gold Coast Winter Championships.

“I wanted to break the record again, that was my goal,” Celestin said. “I knew I had to have a smart race, a good start and a good turn. I didn’t have a good turn but even with a bad one I still got it. It makes me think if I did have a good turn I could be under 30 and hopefully get the Florida Gold Coast record.”

Celestin also won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.51 and was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.44 on Saturday. He has three events remaining on Sunday.

Celestin, a sixth grader at West Glades Middle School, knows his history when it comes to Haitian swimmers. He already has his goals in place and sights set on the Olympics.

“I want to go to the Olympics and swim for Haiti,” said Celestin, whose father was born and raised in Haiti. “They have never gotten a gold medal or any swimmers in the top three and I want to be the first.”

Celestin is already rubbing elbows with Olympians training at Coral Springs. He has made new friends, loves working with Coach Dave Cowmeadow and enjoys watching the older swimmers like Vlad Polyakov, Luke Torres, Arlene Semeco and Dara Torres train.

“I can always see them warming up in the lanes next to me,” Celestin said. “I would be sprinting my heart out and they would still be ahead of me which makes me think I am going to be there one day and it will be fun.”

Celestin, who played soccer and ran track, started swimming after tagging along with his younger brother at his swim lessons. The lessons coach suggested he join a swim team. He swam with Lauderhill and Davie before joining SOFLO.

“I kept getting better and I am where I am now,” said Celestin, who trains with the Senior 2A group.

“I have a feel for the water, it comes natural to me,” Celestin said. “After six months of swimming, I moved up to the better group. I push myself to do well. I really like swimming and I am totally committed to the sport.”

Celestin got his start in swimming purely by accident. After watching his younger brother take swim lessons, Celestin decided to follow in his brother’s footsteps and take swim lessons. His favorite events so far are the 50 freestyle, 50 and 100 breaststroke events.

“Next year one of my goals is to move up to Senior I so I can get more training,” Celestin said. “I want to break the 50 and 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle records.”

In one of the most exciting boys’ races of the day, SOFLO’s Brandon Goldman, 15, came from behind after the first 50 (26.52-26.54 splits) and outsprinted teammate Keegan Boisson-Yates to win the 100-yard backstroke in 54.47. Goldman’s final split was 27.93. Boisson-Yates’ time was 54.79.
