Sophomore Ryan O’Shaughnessy won two events to lead Seton Hall to a convincing 182.5-108.5 victory over Marist this past weekend in the Pirates regular season-ender at the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium in South Orange, N.J.

The Pirates finished the regular season at 9-2.

The team’s 19 men’s qualifiers, including O’Shaughnessy, are now preparing for the Feb. 10-19 Big East Championships in Louisville.

O’Shaugnessy made it all the way to the Big East finals last year as a freshman.

Gators Sweep Tennessee, Indian River; McKnight Finishes Third

University of Florida’s men’s and women’s teams ended the regular season with a sweep of Indian River on Sunday in Gainesville.

One day after sweeping No. 10-ranked Tennessee on Seniors Day, the No. 5 men’s team (6-3, 2-1) defeated the Pioneers, 165-120 and No. 8 women’s team (6-4, 1-2) topped the Pioneers, 157-106.

On Saturday, the Gators topped Tennessee 198-101 in the men’s competition and 180-120 in the women’s.

“It was a tremendous weekend for the seniors,” Florida head coach Gregg Troy said. “They had great performances. It was a tremendous way to finish up the dual meet season for the seniors.”

The Gators won all 34 events. The men are now 25-0 in head-to-head matchups against Indian River and women are 26-2.

SOFLO’s Taylor McKnight, 18, a freshman, finished third in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:07.57. She was fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.13. She led off the Gators’ 800-yard freestyle that finished in 7:47.14.

The Gators will now break from competition before hosting the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 11-13 (diving) and Feb. 16-19 (swimming).

Penn State Knocks Off Michigan

SOFLO’s Natasha Moodie of Michigan won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.06 but it wasn’t enough as No. 25 ranked Penn State upset No. 15 Michigan, 123-120, snapping the Wolverines four-meet win streak on Seniors Day in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Moodie also anchored the Wolverines second place 200-yard medley relay team that finished in 1:42.99 and second place 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in 3:23.16. Michigan was leading 110-97 with two events remaining.

SOFLO’s Bandy, Phelan Compete At Same Meet

In a double dual meet against Louisville and Virginia Tech, Indiana’s women’s team ended its dual meet season with five pool records and wins over the Cardinals, 181-119 and VPI, 223-77, in Louisville.

SOFLO’s Brittney Phelan, a freshman at Indiana, was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.95.

The Hoosiers will now focus on the Feb. 16-19 Big 10 championships in Bloomington. Indiana is a two-time defending champion.

In the men’s competition, Louisville topped VPI, 154-146 and lost to Indiana, 176-124.

Louisville sophomore Kevin Bandy was 10th in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:38.26, 12th in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.98 and 13th in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.24.

AQUATIC NOTEBOOK: Issue 25, Eddie Reese Recovering After Heart Surgery

AQUATIC NOTEBOOK: Issue 25, Eddie Reese Recovering After Heart Surgery

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

January 27, 2011

University of Texas men’s coach Eddie Reese, one of the most distinguished coaches in swimming, was back on the pool deck watching his swimmers train after undergoing heart surgery.

Reese, 69, underwent emergency surgery in an Austin hospital last week to clear a blockage. He had three stents inserted into the affected artery that was 99.9 percent blocked.

The surgery was done by cardiologist Dr. Paul Tucker, father of Samantha Tucker, a member of the Longhorns’ women’s team.

Reese told friends he felt symptoms while walking uphill to the Erwin Center to watch a basketball game between Texas and Texas A&M. He was short of breath and started feeling shooting pains in his arm and decided to get checked out by doctors.

The Daytona Beach-born Reese, who has coached at Texas for 33 years and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2002, exercises regularly but has a family history of heart disease.

For the next few weeks Reese’s activity will be limited.

“I’m fixed,” Reese said. “It’s like that country song, I’m not afraid of dying, but I don’t want to do it today.”

Reese, a University of Florida graduate who has coached swimmers at three Olympic Games and has had teams win NCAA titles in four decades including 2010, is expected to be fully-recovered for his head coaching stint of the U.S. national team for this summer’s FINA World Championships in Shanghai.

Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex Grandstand Shut Down

YMCA officials learned that city engineers for the City of Fort Lauderdale recommended “the closure of the entire grandstand seating area” at Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

YMCA is scheduled to hold the YMCA Short Course Nationals at the complex on April 5-8.

According to its website, YMCA officials will meet with several local officials to try and reconfigure the seating that lost 1,500 seats to the closure or may look for alternate event locations.

An on-site visit is scheduled for Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Florida Senior Games Qualifying This Weekend

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Invited To Compete In Jamaica, First Time In Ten Years

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Invited To Compete In Jamaica, First Time In Ten Years

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

January 26, 2011

Alia Atkinson is a role model not only in South Florida at the Academic Village Pool and Coral Springs Aquatic Complex, but in her native country Jamaica.

Atkinson has been invited to compete in the 16th annual LIME/Y Speedos Karl Dalhouse International Swim Meet Feb. 4-6 at Jamaica’s National Stadium Pool.

The telecommunications firm LIME is sponsoring the event for $500,000 which is expected to add to the prestige of the meet. The “Y” Speedos Swim Club is host club.

For the first time in meet history it will serve as a FINA World Swimming Championships qualifier.

It is the first time in ten years that the two-time Olympian who represents Jamaica internationally will return to compete in a local meet.

Atkinson is entered in six events.

Atkinson, a multi-national short course and long course record holder in Jamaica, will also conduct two clinics for Jamaica’s junior swimmers.

“She is very excited about competing here and we believe some great times are in store for us,” said meet director Dr. Brian James. “This year at Karl Dalhouse, Jamaica will be introduced to its intelligent, articulate. gentle, humble and patriotic swimming champion and they cannot help but fall in love with her. That’s my personal guarantee.

“Alia decided that while she is in Jamaica for the swim meet she will conduct two clinics for Jamaica’s junior swimmers. She is determined to help strengthen Jamaican swimming by sharing some of her skill and experience with younger aspirants.”

The 22-year-old was runner-up for the 2010 Sportswoman of the Year Award behind track star Veronica Campbell-Brown at the recent 2010 Sports Foundation Awards. She told reporters it was the highest honor she has received in her swimming career.

“This is the first major award that I got outside of swimming, so it’s unbelievable to even imagine that I was even nominated for it much less place runner-up,” Atkinson said.

“I didn’t think my performance at world championships was good but I guess other people felt it was higher, so to make runner-up was amazing.”

Atkinson, a Texas A&M graduate, was the first Jamaican swimmer to qualify for two world championship finals at the world short course championships in Dubai. She also won four gold medals in record-performances at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Puerto Rico.

“Y” Speedos president Martin Lyn expects more than 350 swimmers and seven clubs in the field.

“This swim meet features top-class competition and hopefully record-breaking times and we again look forward to a successful staging,” Lyn said.

Joining Atkinson are Jamaican teammates Victoria Ho, who trains with Gordon Andrews at Lake Lytal in West Palm Beach, Kendese Nangle, Timothy Wynter and Alexia Royal Eatmon.
