SOFLO Newcomer Eszter Bucz Thrilling Swim Highlights Session Five Of FGC Comets Invitational

Hungarian Eszter Bucz, one of South Florida Aquatic Club’s newcomers, won the 100-meter breaststroke to highlight action during Session Five of the Florida Gold Coast Long Course Comets Invitational Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

Bucz, 20, a Sun Belt Conference champion and school record holder at Florida Atlantic University, won a thrilling race to the wall against two-time Olympian and training partner Alia Atkinson.

Bucz out-touched Atkinson in 1:13.11, just off her best of 1:13.01. Atkinson, 22, finished in 1:13.43.

During the three-day meet, she was also second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:37.65 and tenth in the 50-meter freestyle in 30.37.

Bucz has been training with SOFLO since completing her second year of collegiate swimming in Boca Raton. She is an NCAA Division 1 qualifier, Sun Belt Conference Swimmer of the Week several times over two seasons and holder of a 15-event win streak.

Bucz broke a 17-year-old record in the 200-yard individual medley previously held by former FAU swimmer and Olympian Noemi Lung,  coached by SOFLO’s six-time Olympic coach Michael Lohberg at Mission Bay. She also broke a 23-year school record in the 400 IM held by Laurence Bensimon.

Other SOFLO girls’ winners were:

Melissa Marinheiro, 14, 13-14 200-meter freestyle, 2:13.42, career-best, FGJO cut. SOFLO swept the top three spots in the event with Emily Kopas (2:14.90) and Tyla Martin (2:14.94). She also won the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.46, career-best, FGJO and 100-meter backstroke in 1:11.75, career-best, FGJO.

Marcella Marinheiro, 16, 15-and-over 200-meter freestyle, 2:10.78, career-best, FLSC cut time; 100-meter freestyle, 1:00.99, career-best, FLSC and 100-meter backstroke in 1:08.16, career-best, FLSC.

Steph Campo, 13, 13-14 50-meter backstroke, 34.71, FGJO.

Emily Kopas, 14, 13-14 50-meter backstroke, 1:15.09, FGJO and 200-meter individual medley, 2:32.95, FGJO.

SOFLO swept the 13-and-over 200-meter freestyle relays.

The girls team of Maria Lopez, Brittany Williford, Leonie Davies and Amber Hunter won in 2:01.52. The boys team of Anthony Fermin, William Perry III, Marc Rojas and Xavier Brown.

During Saturday’s late session, SOFLO’s Zain Qali, 23, posted the fastest 50-meter freestyle time by a Kuwait swimmer this year with a winning time of 24.72.

South Florida Aquatic Club added ninety-five more Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympic qualifying times during Session Four of the Florida Gold Coast Long Course Comets Invitational Sunday at Academic Village Pool.

On the third and final day of the meet, the boys turned in 48 FGJO times and girls added 47.

Samuel Quintero, 10, was a triple winner on Sunday.

Quintero won the 50-meter backstroke in 37.98, 100-meter freestyle in 1:12.25 and 50-meter butterfly in 37.03, all FGJO cuts and career-best times.

Quintero finished with six victories and one runner-up finish in the meet.

Other boys winners were:

Juan Lucas, 12, 50-meter backstroke, 33.10, career-best, FGJO. He finished with four wins, two thirds and one fifth place.

Julien Pinon, 12, 100-meter freestyle, 57.97, career-best, FGJO. His previous best was 1:023.18. He also won the 50-meter butterfly, 29.79, career-best and FGJO. Pinon had four wins and one second place.

Tristan Celestin, 12, won the 11-12 100-meter breaststroke in 1:17.60 and 200-meter breaststroke in 2:50.43, both FGJO cut times. Celestin finished with three wins and one second place.

Celestin was also a member of SOFLO’s winning 200-meter freestyle relay team that won in a season-best 1:57.10. Its’ seed time was 2:06.86. Celestin was joined by Alfredo Mesa Jr., Juan Lucas and Cristian Rossi.

The girls were led by double winner Delanie Perez.

Perez, 10, won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:35.33 and 100-meter freestyle in 1:15.35, both career-bests and FGJO times.

Other individual girls winners were:

Julie Mason, 10, 200-meter breaststroke 4:07.53.

Jessica Rodriguez, 200-meter breaststroke, 3:01.48, career-best, FGJO. Rodriguez finished with five wins and two second places.

SOFLO swept the relays. The girls team won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:06.54, also a season-best. Catharine Cooper led off the winning relay that also featured Bianca Monti, Isabella Pittinger and Allison Kopas.

SOFLO swept the top three spots in the 11-12 girls and boys 200-meter freestyle. The girls top three finishers were Sophia Bucaro (2:19.14), Jessica Rodriguez (2:22.85) and Kelley Heron (2:25.45), all career-best times and Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympic cut times. The boys top three were Julien Pinon (2:06.19), Alfredo Mesa Jr. (2:14.00) and Juan Lucas (2:16.92), all career-bests and FGJO cuts.

SOFLO took the top five places in a close race in the girls’ 100-meter freestyle with Catharine Cooper (1:06), Jessica Rodriguez (1:06.04), Sophia Bucaro (1:06.42), Allison Kopas (1:08.42) and Kelley Heron (1:08.67), all career-best times and FGJO cut times.
