Coral Springs Swim Club Invitational Attracts Record Numbers This Weekend

June 20, 2011

What started out as a small, overflow meet, is now one of the largest summer meets in the Florida Gold Coast.

The annual Coral Springs Swim Club Invitational, that gets under way on Thursday at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex, has attracted 625 swimmers and twenty-nine teams.

New England’s top swim club, Bernal’s Gator Swim Club, coached by two-time U.S. Olympic coach Joe Bernal, heads the field of out-of-state teams travelling to the meet.

Two top Indiana teams, Zionsville Swim Club and Noblesville Swim Club, are also entered.

Westport Weston Family Y of Connecticut and Tampa Bay Aquatics of Florida Swimming are also hitting the road for the invitational.

Bulado Swim Club of Willemstad, Curacao, off the Venezuelan coast, will add a little international flavor to the meet. The club, founded in 1973, has had local, national and international success in swimming.

The largest club entered is host South Florida Aquatic Club with 138 swimmers from both SOFLO’s Pembroke Pines and Coral Springs aquatic venues.

Florida Gold Coast teams entered are Blue Marlins of Hialeah Gardens, BEST, Davie Nadadores, Flying Fish Swim Club, Gulliver Swim Club, Heritage Aquatic Team, Hialeah Swim Club, Martin County Aquatics, Miami-Dade County Aquatic Club, North Palm Beach, Pine Crest, St. Andrew’s, SwimFast, Wahoos of Wellington and YMCA of Broward County.

Davie is coming off an altitude training camp in Mexico. Pine Crest is coming off the Santa Clara International Grand Prix and several SOFLO swimmers are coming off the Sette Colli Trophy Meet in Rome, Italy, including two-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, who brought home gold and bronze medals, two career-best times and Jamaica national records.
