Julien Pinon of the South Florida Aquatic Club won his second individual event Thursday night at the USA Swimming Southern Zone Age Group Championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.

Pinon, 12, won the 400-meter freestyle in a career-best 4 minutes, 26.36 seconds. He bettered his morning prelim previous best of 4:26.90. His seed time of 4:28.63.

Also in the 400, Pinon’s SOFLO teammates Alfredo Mesa Jr. was sixth in the 4:38.52 and Juan Lucas 11th in a career-best 4:42.80.

Pinon was coming off his victory in the 200-meter freestyle in a near-meet record swim Wednesday night.

Swimming back-to-back best times in the 400 (his seed time was 4:28.63) was a challenge for Pinon.

“It feels awful going fast in morning session and then coming back and going fast in final, “ Pinon said. “It’s not easy.

“I think I am happiest with the 200 free because it was my goal. I wanted to beat the meet record and I came extremely close to it so I was really happy to do that here.”

Making his zone debut against some of the region’s top swimmers is leaving a lasting impression on Pinon, a national and Florida Gold Coast age group record holder.

“I am definitely getting a lot of attention, meeting other swimmers from other teams and states,” Pinion said. “They talk about me almost breaking the record. I am definitely happy with what I am doing right now. This was a meet I wanted to do well in but it’s hard.

“It feels like I just ran out of gas,” Pinon said. “I just finished the relay and didn’t feel good. I didn’t feel good after the 400 and the relay was right after it. I was happy I still got a good time. Now all I want to do is eat and rest.”

Pinon also led off the Florida Gold Coast’s sixth place 11-12 400-meter freestyle relay that finished in 4:04.93. He was joined by SOFLO teammates Alfredo Mesa Jr. and Cristian Rossi. FGC’s Michael Hovart was also a relay member.

SOFLO’s Brandon Goldman, 16, swam back-to-back career-bests in the 15-18 200-meter backstroke. He swam 2:11.76 to better his previous best of 2:12.48 in prelims and came back with a 2:11.29 to finish seventh in finals.

Florida Gold Coast’s 15-18 “A” 400-meter freestyle relay won in 3:35.18 with Daniel Spas, Wali Toulson, Austin Saunders and Cory Perez.

SOFLO’s Emma Lincoln led off FGC’s seventh place girls 400-meter freestyle relay (1:00.15 split, second fastest).
