Michael Lohberg’s Legacy Lives On At Coral Springs Aquatic Complex

Michael Lohberg’s Legacy Lives On At Coral Springs Aquatic Complex

December 8, 2011

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

The memory of six-time Olympic coach Michael Lohberg lives on.

On Tuesday, the Coral Springs City Commission passed a resolution to name the 50-meter Olympic pool at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex after Lohberg.

In honor of the longtime Coral Springs Swim Club head coach’s distinguished life and coaching career, Lohberg will be remembered where he spent most of his time coaching hundreds of swimmers.

Lohberg, 61, died in April 2011 after a lengthy battle with aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder he was diagnosed with a week after the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials.

Said his wife Biggi Lohberg: “I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank the City Commission. Michael would be very honored and it’s just wonderful to know that his name and his memory will live on at the pool. He loved his work and he loved to be at the Aquatic Complex.”

The German-born Lohberg coached five-time Olympian Dara Torres, one of eight swimmers from various countries he coached to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. All trained at the aquatic complex.

In addition to his work on the international stage, he coached CSSC to nine Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympic Championships. He was inducted into the 2009 Broward County Sports Hall of Fame.

Lohberg coached at six Olympics and qualified swimmers for every Olympics from 1984 to 2008. He also co-founded the South Florida Aquatic Club along with CEO Chris Anderson.

“We wanted to name part of the facility in memory of Michael because he was a large part of our success,” said Coral Springs Director of Aquatic Services Mike McGoun, a close friend of Lohberg for nearly two decades. “We were fortunate to have someone of that caliber at our facility.”

Said Coral Springs Mayor Roy Gold: “He did a lot for our community and he did a lot for swimming nationally and internationally. As a City, we’re very proud of the work that he did here.”
