SOFLO Lands Ten On FGC Open Water All-Star Team; SOFLO Shines At FGC Open Water Challenge

Catharine Cooper, Leonie Davies and Kelley Heron lead an 11-swimmer contingent from the South Florida Aquatic Club recently named to the Florida Gold Coast Open Water Girls’ All-Star Team.

Selected to the 11-12 girls team, based on 500-yard freestyle short course times were: Kelley Heron (5:21.45), Bianca Monti (5:35.17), Delanie Perez (5:39.60), Andrea Bucaro (5:41.51) and Catharine Cooper (5:43.72).

Based on 1,650-yard freestyle short course times, named to the 13-14 girls’ team were Jessica Rodriguez (18:15.32), Sophia Bucaro (18:20.77) and Kylie Herman (18:25.53).

The 15-18 girls selected based on 1,500-meter freestyle times were Melissa Marinheiro (17:39.15) and Leonie Davies (18:11.25).

The Open Water All-Star Challenge Cup races against Florida Swimming are 2.5K for 12-and-unders and 5K for all others. The Fran Crippen Mile will also be held. The road trip is April 27-29 to Miromar Lakes in Fort Myers. The FGC All-Star team will be outfitted.

The boys’ team is expected to be released on Tuesday by FGC open water chairman Sid Cassidy of St. Andrew’s Swimming.

FGC Open Water Challenge

South Florida Aquatic Club captured eleven of the 15 age group events Saturday in the Florida Gold Coast Open Water Challenge Saturday at Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

The pool was re-configured into an open water course.

Jessica Rodriguez, 13, and Haley Wright, 15, won the girls 5K events.

Kelley Heron, 12, won the 3K race in 36:22.55 minutes.

Vanessa Mesa, 10, Bianca Monti, 12, and Leonie Davies, 15, won the girls 1K races.

Alfredo Mesa Jr., 13, and Fernando Quintero, 15, won the 5K boys races.

Kevin Porto, 12, won the 3K race in 35:40.16.

Rafael Rodriguez, 10, and Matthew Menocal, 12, won the boys’ 1K age group races.
