Coral Springs, SOFLO Swimmers Compete In YMCA Masters National Meet This Week In Fort Lauderdale

Coral Springs Swim Club and South Florida Aquatic Club will be well-represented at the YMCA Masters Short Course National Championships that begins Thursday at Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

The four-day USMS-sanctioned meet opens Thursday with the distance events. All races are timed finals.

Celia Devanney, 54, of the Coral Springs Masters competing for the Broward County YMCA, will compete in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Devanney’s teammates include Barbara Protzman, 57, Deven Christopher, 37, Catalina Fazzano, 58, and Lars Ferron, 57, and will also compete under the Broward YMCA umbrella.

SOFLO’s Jen Martin, 31, a Pembroke Pines police officer, is also expected to compete. Martin won six gold medals and two silvers all in career-best times at the World Police and Fire Games last year.

Martin will serve as meet director of the June 17th Florida Police and Fire

Games 2012 at the North County Aquatic Center in Sebastian.

The top local team entry is Broward County YMCA, led by world age group masters record holder Cav Cavanaugh, 76, of Fort Lauderdale. Other top Broward swimmers are Darcy LaFountain, 56, Leticia Castro, 52, Suzanne Dearworth, 39, Cathy Mancino, 62, Ann Stewart, 41, and Dale LeClair, 42.

Broward County YMCA finished third last year in the combined, men’s and women’s team standings and broke two YMCA national records. Sarasota Family YMCA is defending champion.

Several swimmers in the field are preparing for the April 26-29 USMS Short Course Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

The next local masters meet is the May 5th Last Chance Short Course

Yards Meet at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex. Entry deadline is May 1.

U.S. Masters Swimming’s charitable Swimming Saves Lives Foundation will give five $1,000 scholarships to college swimmers for the 2012-2013 academic year. Applicants must be 18 years or older, must be swimming for a college club program and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Those interested in applying is also being asked to write a 150-word essay why they like swimming. The application deadline is June 22, 2012. Scholarship recipients will be required to attend the USMS annual convention Sept. 14-16 in Greensboro, N.C. USMS will pay for registration, airfare and hotel for the scholarship recipients.
