Eight swimmers from the South Florida Aquatic Club have been invited to compete as members of the Florida Gold Coast Open Water Boys and Girls All-Star Team.
Four girls and four boys were invited based on short course times in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle events.
Selected for the 11-12 category were Kevin Porto, 12, (5:16.30), Nicholas Perera, 12, (5:17.89) and Ricardo Roche, 12, (5:19.69).
Julien Pinon, 13, was selected for 13-14 age group (16:45.85).
Selected to the 11-12 girls group was Kelley Heron (5:21.45).
Named to the 13-14 girls’ group were Jessica Rodriguez (18:15.32) and Sophia Bucaro (18:20.77). Melissa Marinheiro was chosen for the 15-18 category (17:39.15).
SOFLO age group coach Megan Garland has been selected as a member of the all-star coaching staff.
Several other SOFLO swimmers are on the master list as alternates if invited swimmers are unable to make the trip.
The All-Star swimmers will represent the Florida Gold Coast in the Open Water All-Star Challenge Cup races against Florida Swimming. The distances are 2.5K for 12-and-unders and 5K for all others. The Fran Crippen Mile will also be held. The road trip is April 27-29 to Miromar Lakes in Fort Myers. The FGC All-Star team will be outfitted and accompanied by coaches and chaperones.
SOFLO Picnic Social Saturday At C.B. Smith Park
Swimmers, parents and coaches will get together for the Goodwill Games Picnic, hosted by the Comets Swim Team Booster Club at C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, Saturday, April 14 at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be food, refreshments, games and raffle. SOFLO’s national record-breaking 11-12 boys’ relay team will be recognized along with Age Group Coach of the Year Rose Lockie. Tickets remain on sale through Thursday and may be purchased at the Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines on the pool deck. C.B. Smith Park is located at 900 N. Flamingo Road.
