SOFLO’s Atkinson Wins “C” Sprint Freestyle Final At Santa Clara Grand Prix

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson, competing in one of her off events, was the top finisher in the “C” final Saturday night at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix.

Atkinson, 23, swimming in Lane 3, won the “C” final of the 50-meter freestyle in 26.28 seconds, faster than her morning prelim time of 26.54 but slower than her best time of 25.90.

On Sunday, the fourth and final day of the meet, the two-time Jamaican Olympian will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke and attempt to make the FINA qualifying time for London. Her best is 1:08.86.

SOFLO teammate Marcella Marinheiro, 17, will compete in the 100-meter backstroke, her first long course meters race. Her best short course yards time is 58.15.

In other championship finals:

Women’s 400-meter individual medley: Defending Olympic champion Stephanie Rice, 23, of Australia held off Caitlin Leverenz, 21, of California Aquatics to win in 4:35.87. Leverenz finished in 4:37.13 and Min Zhao of China was third in 4:40.67.

Men’s 400-meter individual medley: Tyler Clary, 23, of FAST had no problem winning in 4:15.02 ahead of Japan’s Yuya Horihata in 4:16.27 and Joshua Prenot, 18, of Santa Maria Swimming in 4:18.77.

Women’s 200-meter freestyle: Aussie Bronte Barratt, 23, broke the meet record by .01 to win in 1:57.17. Dana Vollmer, swimming in Lane 7 after a disappointing morning swim was the early leader and finished second in 1:57.25. Japan’s Hanae Ito was third in 1:58.05.

Men’s 200-meter freestyle: Tae-Hwan Park, 22, of South Korea, ranked fifth in the world, made it four-for-four after winning in 1:46.88 ahead of Aussie Ryan Napoleon, 22, in 1:48.66 and Japan’s Yuki Kobori in 1:49.36.

Women’s 200-meter backstroke: In a close finish, Meagen Nay, 23, edged Aussie teammate Emily Seebohm, 19, to win in 2:08.04 to 2:08.08. Canadian Hilary Caldwell was third in 2:11.41.

Men’s 200-meter backstroke: Tyler Clary won his second event of the night in 1:57.90. Japan’s Kazuki Wata Watanabe was second in 1:59.56 and Aussie Ashley Delaney was third in 2:00.14.

Women’s 50-meter freestyle: Sixteen-year-old Aussie Yolane Kukla won in 24.97 ahead of Madison Kennedy of SwimMAC in 25.05 and Aussie Libby Trickett in 25.22.

Men’s 50-meter freestyle: Anthony Ervin, 31, of California Aquatics won a close race in 22.35 followed by teammates William Copeland, 26, in 22.74 and Japan’s Takuro Fuji in 22.86.

Kuczynski Swims Best Time In Sweden

SOFLO’s Caroline Kuczynski finished second in a career-best time in the 100-meter freestyle Saturday at the Distrikt Masterskap in her Swedish meet debut in Burlov. The Arizona State senior-to-be, in the midst of a training trip in Sweden, was competing in her first meet since the Canadian Olympic Trials. Kuczynski called it a training meet since she is not rested or tapered. “Not bad,” she tweeted.

McLean Time Trials In Trinidad

SOFLO two-time Olympian Sharntelle McLean of Trinidad and Tobago swam 26.66 in a 50-meter freestyle time trial on Saturday at the ASATT National Open Long Course Championships at the Marlins Swimming Pool in Port of Spain. She will race the 50-meter freestyle on Sunday to try and make the FINA qualifying time for London.

Austin Elite Invitational

North Baltimore Aquatic Club teammates Michael Phelps and Allison Schmitt won their final tune-up races before the U.S. Olympic trials later this month.

Phelps won the 400-meter individual medley in 4:15.88 Saturday night at the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invitational in Austin. It was another rare appearance for Phelps who said he gave up the event but continues to swim and do well in.

Schmitt finished ahead of Missy Franklin to win the 200-meter freestyle in 1:55.04, a U.S. Open record and less than a tenth off her own  American record of 1:54.96. It was also the second fastest time in the world this year.

George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago knocked off Jimmy Feigen, 22.11- 22.21 in the 50-meter freestyle. Bovell had the best start and was out early.

Teenager Missy Franklin won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:08.74.

Mare Nostrum

Brent Hayden and three other Canadian teammates won four gold medals at the Barcelona, Spain meet. Katerine Savard, Barbara Jardin and Victoria Poon also won gold medals at the opening stop of the Mare Nostrum swimming circuit.

Hayden won the 100-meter freestyle in 49.02 ahead of Cuba’s Hanser Garcia in 49.32 and Russia’s Nikita Lobintsev in 49.40.

Poon won the 50-meter freestyle in 25.30 ahead of Aussie Marieke Guehrer in 25.40 and Canadian Chantal Van Landeghem in 25.50.

Jardin won the 200-meter freestyle by more than a second in 1:59.11 and Savard won the 100-meter butterfly in 58.58.

Great Britain’s Rebecca Adlington, South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh and Brazil’s Kaio Almeida broke meet records. Adlington in the 800-meter freestyle in 8:19.86, Van der Burgh in the 100-meter breaststroke in 59.73 and Almeida in the 200-meter butterfly in 1:55.59.

Miscellaneous

Two weeks after winning the Florida 70.3, seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong won his second half Ironman on Saturday in Hawaii. Armstrong won the Rohto Ironman 70.3 Hawaii in Kohala Coast in a meet record 3 hours, 50 minutes and 55 seconds ahead of Greg Bennett (3:53:41) and Chris Lieto (4:05:55). Armstrong plans on competing in his first full Ironman in three weeks in France….U.S. Olympian Laura Reback Bennett of North Palm Beach won the Dallas ITU Pan American Cup in 2:10:22. It was her first race since qualifying for her second Olympic team. Miami’s Manny Huerta, also a 2012 U.S. Olympian, was second in 1:58:59. Thomas Barton of Miami was second in the USA Triathlon Elite Development Race in 59:54…At the inaugural Motivation Man Half Ironman in West Palm Beach, Cristian Puentes, 24, won the men’s title in 4:31:48 and Heather Gollnick, 42, won the women’s race in 4:47:50. John Reback, 42, (2:03:45) and former Wellington swimmer Amy Miteff, 28, (2:29:04) won the Olympic distance race titles.

South Florida Aquatic Club boys and girls combined for 113 best times and 26 wins at the Comets/Florida Gold Coast Area 2 Developmental Meet Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

After being rained out Friday night, it was clear skies for swimmers eager to get into the pool and swim fast.

SOFLO girls won 12 events and posted 59 best times. They were led by triple winners and top-seeds Andrea Pereira and Daniela Jimenez.

Pereira, 11, won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:59.57; 100-meter backstroke in 1:23.11 and 50-meter freestyle in 33.03, all three best times and JO cuts.

Jimenez, 16, won the 50-meter butterfly in a best time 33.16; 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:17.47 best time and 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:46.23.

Other girls’ winners were:

Carly Swanson, 14, 50-meter butterfly, 35.08, best time, JO cut. She was  second in the 100-meter butterfly in another best time, 1:20.60.

Vanessa Mesa, 10, 200-meter backstroke, 2:57.35, JO cut and 200-meter butterfly, 3:19.28.

Delanie Perez, 11, 200-meter backstroke, 3:00.66, JO cut and second in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:53.04.
