SOFLO Girls Sparkle On Opening Day Of Speedo Champions Series Zone Championships

SOFLO coach Chris Anderson called the girls’ 200-meter medley relay “outside smoke” after watching them knock off an experienced women’s field on opening night of the Speedo Champions Series’ Southern Zone Sectional Championships.

Swimming in Lane 10, the “B” relay of Marcella Marinheiro, 17, Alia Atkinson, 23, Maria Lopez, 16, and Melissa Marinheiro won the event in a season-best time of 2:00.77, bettering their seed time of 2:09.23 at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

Lopez was flying on the butterfly leg turning in a split of 29.6, her best time and first time she broke 30 seconds.

“I was just trying to go out fast,” Lopez said. “Chris told us we would be in the outside lane and we could be ahead if we went out very fast. It felt good to win in the outside lane. No one could see us. That was the plan.

“My favorite event is the 50 butterfly. I was really surprised when he told me the split. I thought wow. I thought I was going fast, but not that fast. I am really happy with my time. Relays are really fun. It’s a team thing, too.”

Lopez isn’t tapered for the meet, choosing instead to prepare for the upcoming zone meet in Texas.

“This is a fun meet for me,” Lopez said. “I’ve been feeling sore in the water but swimming well.”

Melissa Marinheiro finished sixth in the 1500-meter freestyle in a best time 17:27.49, just missing a junior national cut by seven seconds. Her previous best time was 17:48.66. At 15, she was one of the youngest swimmers in the race.

Marinheiro anchored the winning 200-meter medley relay and led off on the fourth-place 200-meter freestyle relay.

“I have been swimming this since I was 11, I enjoy long distance events,” Marinheiro said. “I just try to keep a pace, go for my goal time and keep up with the other girls. There’s no time to think about anything else. I felt pretty confident about my swim. I wanted a junior national cut. I came close.

“I am happy with dropping 20 seconds,” Marinheiro said. “It’s a nice way to start the meet. I felt amazing in the water and I am excited about my other races. I am going to try to get my cuts in the 200, 400 and 800 free. I am closest in the 400.”

Marinheiro said stepping up her freestyle and dryland training since returning from the Brazilian Junior Nationals has helped her improve and swim fast.

Anderson was pleased with the team’s start on Friday. His team, one of the youngest at the meet, is going up against several Olympians, national champions and record holders and collegiate swimmers.

The girls team is third among the team standings after the first day of the meet.

“I’m excited about the start of the meet,” Anderson said. “It was a good way to start off the meet. I was really happy with Melissa in the mile and she was able to fend off everyone in the relay. We put the four fastest girls on the relay in Lane 10 and everyone stepped up.”

The four-day meet continues on Friday with prelims and finals in the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke, 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals 5 p.m.
