Triple Winner Rafael Rodriguez Leads SOFLO On Day One Of FGC Junior Olympics

Rafael Rodriguez captured three individual events Friday night at the Florida Gold Coast 14-and-Under Junior Olympic Long Course Swimming Championships at Plantation Central Park.

Rodriguez, 10, won the 10-and-under 50-meter freestyle in a best time 31.16, matching his morning prelim time.

Rodriguez also won the 100-meter butterfly in a best time of 1:15.54, bettering his previous best of 1:20.00. SOFLO teammate Leo Mateus, 10, was second in a best time 1:19.08, bettering his previous best of 1:223.3.

Rodriguez won the 400-meter freestyle in a best time of 4:58.25, breaking 5 minutes for the first time. His previous best was 5:19.55. Mateus was fourth in a best time 5:23.73, a big drop from his previous best 5:37.70.

Julien Pinon, 13, won his first JO long course title in the 13-14 age group in the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 25.40, lowering his previous best of 26.17. He went 25.97 in prelims.

Pinon was also second in the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:17.79, lowering his previous best of 4:22.95.

SOFLO teammate Bianca Monti, 12, broke 30 seconds for the first time with a third place finish in the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 29.57. Her previous best was 30.43 which she first lowered in morning prelims in 29.62. 

Catharine Cooper, preparing for next month’s zone championships, won the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 28.40, bettering her previous best of 28.95. She was also second in the 400-meter freestyle in a best time of 4:49.01, lowering her previous best of 4:58.65. Teammates Sarah Bucaro and Delanie Perez were also among the top five finishers in the distance event.

Kelley Heron, 12, won the 11-12 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:22.10, bettering her previous best of 1:23.72. Heron was also second in the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:32.51. Her previous best was 2:37.74.

SOFLO had four girl finalists (Heron, Megan Schimansky, Isabella Pittinger and Sarah Bucaro) and four boy finalists (Andres Lares, Kevin Porto, Ricardo Roche and Samuel Quintero) in the 200 backstroke.

Nicholas Perera, 12, posted a best time in the 400-meter freestyle to finish second in 4:35.42. His previous best was 4:48.17.

Vanessa Mesa, 10, won the 400-meter freestyle in a best time of 5:05.33, bettering her previous best of 5:19.94. Mesa was also second in the 100-meter butterfly in a best time 1:21.27, lowering her previous best of 1:22.10.

SOFLO’s “A” 13-14 boys won the 200-meter freestyle relay in a season-best 1:45.79 with Alfredo Mesa, Cristian Rossi, Tristan Celestin and Julien Pinon. The relay’s seed time was 1:46.76.

SOFLO’s “A” 11-12 girls won the 400-meter freestyle relay in a season-best 4:25.01 with Bianca Monti, Delanie Perez, Isabella Pittinger and Kelley Heron. The foursome bettered their seed time of 4:26.21.

In morning prelims:

Rodriguez, 10, earned the top seed in the 10-and-under 50-meter freestyle in a best time of 31.16, lowering his previous best of 31.97.

SOFLO had three swimmers qualify in the 11-12 50-meter freestyle. Cooper, 12, earned the top seed in 29.17.  Monti, 12, swam the second-fastest time in a best time of 29.62 lowering her previous best of 30.43. Pittinger, 12, swam the sixth-fastest in a best time 30.58 lowering her previous best of 30.71.

Heron, 12, earned the top seed in the 11-12 100-meter breaststroke in a best time of 1:23.22 lowering her previous best of 1:23.72.

Celestin, 13, swam the fastest time in the 13-14 100-meter breaststroke in a best time of 1:12.66, lowering his previous best of 1:13.70. Also in the event, Jonathan Strod, 13, dropped from 1:19.89 to 1:16.20 and Alexander Monti, 14, dropped from 1:20.36 to 1:18.75.

In the boys’ 10-and-under 100-meter butterfly, Rodriguez, 10, swam the fastest time in a best time 1:17.61 lowering his previous best of 1:20. Mateus, 10, swam the second fastest time, also in a lifetime-best time of 1:20.26, bettering his previous best of 1:23.73.

Samantha Stinemire, 14, lowered her best time in the 13-14 200-meter backstroke in 2:33.70, lowering her previous best of 2:39.67.

In the boys’ 13-14 200-meter backstroke, Juan Lucas, 13, dropped from 2:28.09 to 2:25.60 and Gustavo Valery, 14, dropped from 2:28.33 to 2:27.65.

Perera, 12, lowered his best time in the 11-12 50-meter freestyle from 30.01 to 28.86 and also the 100-meter butterfly from 1:09.08 to 1:08.98.

Veronica Postolski, 14, lowered her best time in the 13-14 50-meter freestyle from 29.94 to 28.68.

Pinon, 13, swam a best time in the 50-meter freestyle in 25.97, bettering his previous best of 26.17. In the same event, Celestin lowered his best time from 26.92 to 26.68.

Christian Carlson, 12, swam a best time in the 11-12 100-meter breaststroke in 1:29.83, bettering his previous best of 1:31.65.

Audrey Mason, 14, swam the second fastest time in the 13-14 100-meter breaststroke in 1:19.75, lowering her previous best of 1:21.11.

Delaney Biro, 10, swam a best time in the 10-and-under 100-meter butterfly in 1:23.80, improving her previous best of 1:25.64.

Bianca Monti, 12, lowered her best time in the 11-12 100-meter butterfly from 1:14.48 to 1:13.30.

Natasha Testa, 13, bettered her 100-meter butterfly time from 1:14.74 to 1:10.70.

Jonathan Strod, 13, improved his 100-meter butterfly time from 1:08.91 to 1:06.06.

The three-day meet continues through Sunday with prelims at 8:30 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. The public is welcome.
