South Florida Aquatic Club won the combined team title at the USA Swimming Southern Zone Senior Long Course Swimming Championships Friday night at Plantation Central Park Aquatic Complex.
Buoyed by depth and talent throughout the week and two second-place finishes on the fifth and final night, SOFLO won by more than 1,000 points, topping a field of 22 teams including Team Greenville, Team FLA, First Colony Swim Team and Plantation.
It was the first major team title SOFLO won as a stand-alone USA Swimming club since the Comets and Coral Springs Swim Club parted ways amicably on July 31.
SOFLO’s Marc Rojas, 18, finished his outstanding week, that featured two junior national cut times, with a second place finish in the 1500-meter freestyle in a lifetime-best 16:18.40, lowering his previous best of 16:42.49.
Rojas also earned the top seed in the 200-meter individual medley in a best time 2:13.74 but scratched from the final to swim the mile. His previous IM time was 2:17.73.
Also finishing second was SOFLO’s girls 400-meter medley relay team in 4:37.29 with Marcella Marinheiro, Jessica Rodriguez, Maria Lopez and Bianca Muniz.
Rojas and SOFLO teammate Melissa Marinheiro now depart this weekend with SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson for the Aug. 13-17 USA Swimming Speedo Junior Nationals in Indianapolis.
