Marinheiro, Pinon Top SOFLO Finishers In Friday Night Distance

Teenager Melissa Marinheiro of South Florida Aquatic Club started off on a winning note Friday night at Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

Marinheiro, 15, won the girls title in the Friday Night Distance on opening night of the SOFLO/Comets three-day meet.

Marinheiro topped a field of 54 swimmers to win the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17 minutes, 20.57 seconds. Daniella Vandenberg, 16, of Davie Nadadores was second in a best time 17:43.67. Her previous best was 19:10.01.

SOFLO teammate Jessica Rodriguez, 13, was fifth in a best time 18:13.20. Her previous best was 18:15.32. SOFLO had four other finishers in the Top 10. Marcella Marinheiro, 17, was seventh in a best time of 18:29.90 followed by Kelley Heron in 18:44.33, Amber Hunter, 16, in a best time 18:44.75 and Kylie Herman, 15, in 18:50.50.

In the boys’ competition, Julien Pinon was SOFLO’s top finisher placing 12th in 17:15.25. Pinon, a freshman at American Heritage, was competing the night before the 49th Woodson Invitational which his boys team is favored to win.

SOFLO teammate Gustavo Valery, 14, was 14th in a best time 17:30.77, bettering his previous best of 18:24.36.

The distance field featured more than 100 swimmers. The meet continues Saturday and Sunday with the IMX Challenge.
