SOFLO’s Rodriguez, Pinon, Boys Relay Win On Day One, SOFLO Second At Winter Champs

Fresh off his first state high school meet, Julien Pinon of South Florida Aquatic Club won the 1,000-yard freestyle and was on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay on Day One of the 22nd annual Florida Gold Coast Speedo Winter Championships at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

Pinon, 14, won his age group in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 52.48 seconds. Teammate Ricardo Roche was second in a best time 11:00.97, dropping from 11:31.10.

U.S. national open water team member Joey Pedraza of Davie Nadadores won the 1,000 event in 9:08.67.

Pinon joined teammates Alfredo Mesa, Ryan Capote and Jonathan Strod to win the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:21.81.

The SOFLO girls team was led by Jessica Rodriguez, 13, who won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:37.07. Her previous best was 4:41.84. Kelley Heron, 13, was second in the event in 4:42.96, also a best time, dropping from 4:48.21.

SOFLO girls 800-yard freestyle relay of Amber Hunter, Alia Atkinson, Marcella Marinheiro and Maria Lopez lost a close race to Pine Crest Swimming, 7:39.83-7:39.91.

South Florida Aquatic Club and Davie Nadadores, the meet’s two largest Florida Gold Coast teams, are battling it out in the team competition. SOFLO trails Davie by 10 points in the girls and 24 in the boys. The four-day meet continues on Friday with a full schedule.
