South Florida Aquatic Club, the second largest club at the 22nd Speedo Winter Championships, walked away with a girls championship trophy and two second place trophies after a successful four days of competition at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The boys and girls teams were impressive and nearly caught overall champion Davie Nadadores for the combined team title. Davie won with 2,386 points. SOFLO finished with 2,074.

SOFLO girls won with 1,019.50 and was the only team to crack the 1,000-point barrier. Pine Crest was second with 939.

SOFLO boys finished second with 1,209.50 behind Davie with 1,678.50 points.

“I think we did a wonderful job tonight,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “We really did try to catch Davie. We came up a couple of swimmers and events too short. It was a great meet for us, getting together and supporting one another and going best times. The 92 swimmers we had did a great job.”

Rafael Rodriguez led SOFLO with three Florida Gold Coast records and one open record in two individual events and one relay.

During the four-day meet that featured a record 1,355 swimmers and more than 50 teams, 23 Florida Gold Coast individual records and four relay records were set.

On the fourth and final night, Rodriguez, 10, won the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:21.43, dropping from 2:25.13. He also won the 50-yard backstroke in a best time 31.97, dropping from 32.85 and 100-yard freestyle in a best time 58.10, dropping from 59.04.

“I am really happy,” Rodriguez said. “I think I did so well because my friends help me in practice and push me. I get really happy when I break records. I think I was happiest when I broke the relay record because I did it with my friends and teammates.

“My goal is always to do my best as possible,” said the fifth grader. “I really wanted that 200 free record. I had been really close for a really long time. I was excited when I broke it.”

Rodriguez has been swimming for nearly four years. He recently joined Coach Rose Lockie’s group.

“She’s helped me a lot since I joined her group and I am getting better,” Rodriguez said. “I get really competitive sometimes. It makes me swim fast. This has been my best meet so far.”

After the 1,650-yard freestyle races, SOFLO trailed Davie by less than 100 points, 1,916.50-1,820, in the combined team standings. SOFLO swimmers dominated the distance events.

SOFLO’s success was evenly distributed throughout the age groups.
