Julien Pinon and his South Florida Aquatic Club teammates had another record-breaking, time-dropping, winning night Saturday at the Florida Gold Coast 14-and-Under Short Course Junior Olympic Championships at Coral Springs.

Pinon, 14, broke his fourth and fifth FGC records in two days in the championship final of the 200-yard freestyle.

After breaking the FGC and FGC Open records in the 500-yard freestyle and playing a key role in SOFLO’s 800-yard freestyle record performance Friday night, Pinon came back on the second night to win the 200-yard freestyle in a lifetime-best 1:40.78.

Pinon broke his own 2012 FGC record of 1:41.31 and 2011 FGC Open record of 1:40.83 set by Benjamin Creekmore. Pinon’s previous best time was 1:41.44.

Pinon was also third in the 50-yard butterfly in 24.71.

Alexander Monti, 14, won the 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:28.46, dropping from 4:38.11.

SOFLO boys 10-and-under 200-yard medley relay of Jie Hoon Lee, Michael Arias, John Paul Handal and Nicolas Rossi was second in 2:16.77. The foursome was also second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:59.21.

SOFLO boys 11-12 200-yard medley relay of Sam Quintero, Brandon Moran, Gabriel Segui and Rafael Rodriguez was third in 2:02.95.

Quintero was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:37.41 (2:40.28 was his previous best), followed by Moran third in 2:42.23, also a best time, dropping from 2:44.78.

Arias was third in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:11.51, dropping from 2:13.04 and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:13.47. He swam a best time 1:12.03 in prelims. His previous best was 1:13.65.

SOFLO girls were led by individual champion Jessica Rodriguez, 14, winning the 13-14 200-yard breaststroke in a lifetime-best 2:23.44, bettering her previous best of 2:27.19. She was also third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:39.56.

Delanie Perez, 12, was second in the 11-12 200-yard breaststroke in a best time of 2:35.08, dropping from 2:39.02. She was third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:57.23, another best time. It was the first time she broke 5 minutes. Her previous best was 5:00.48.

SOFLO girls 200-yard medley relay of Michelle Marinheiro, Isabella Di Salvo, Kyana Castro and Valentina Carrion were second in 2:20.69, lowering their seed time of 2:22.25.

Two-time defending champion South Florida Aquatic Club heads into the final day of competition seeking its third team championship. The battle is between SOFLO, Pine Crest, host Coral Springs and Davie.

SOFLO’s 14-and-under swimmers had its own cheering gallery when older team members including Xavier Brown, Jordan Colon, Roger Capote and Maria Lopez attended the meet to show their team support.

“They swam well, very well,” said SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson. “We had some up-and-coming athletes do a really nice job. They are doing well and performing with confidence.

“Our older group of swimmers came to support the younger ones with SOFLO cheers and it got the kids excited,” Anderson said.

“It is a true team thing. Our kids and coaches are overachieving. Our kids are coming into their own and going best times at the bottom of their age group. To have this kind of showing, the amount of athletes we had in finals and then moving up in finals is encouraging for our group.

“And our coaches are doing such a great job coaching. They are making our kids look great and they are feeding off each other. Hopefully, we can build off this session and tomorrow will be a great day.”
