SOFLO Wins Big At Sectionals; Moves Into Second Place After Day One

March 14, 2013

South Florida Aquatic Club, still cloud-walking after its Junior Olympics victory, continued to build off its success on the opening day of the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships Thursday at chilly, windswept Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

SOFLO, second in the women’s team standings, was a double winner in the women’s relays and swam several lifetime-bests on the opening night of the four-day meet.

Bluefish Swim Club leads after Day One with 174 points. SOFLO is second with 163 points and Davie Nadadores is third with 153.

SOFLO “A” won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:01.18 with Marcella Marinheiro, Alia Atkinson, Maria Lopez and Melissa Marinheiro.

The same foursome in different order won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:50.45 with Lopez, Atkinson and Marcella and Melissa Marinheiro.

Melissa Marinheiro, 15, was top SOFLO finisher in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle placing fourth in a lifetime-best 17:10.20, a drop from her previous best of 17:27.49. She also qualified for Winter Junior Nationals in the event.

SOFLO teammate Kylie Herman, 15, was 16th in 18:26.81. Kelley Heron, 13, finished 18th in a lifetime-best 18:32.96, dropping from 18:45.16

“I thought we did great,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “We had a lot of best times. Melissa has a great swim, dropping 20 seconds.

“We had some really solid swims. All four of our guys went best times and four out of our five girls swam best times. We are gearing ourselves up for Senior Champs. We have been training for five months for this, it’s not totally unexpected. It was a good team showing. I am excited for tomorrow’s events and see what happens.”
