South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got off to another good start on the first full day of events at the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships at Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

Three-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson, 24, won the 100-meter breaststroke against an Olympic field. She won in 1:08.64. Swedish Olympian Rebecca Ejdervik of Hurricane Swimming was second in 1:09.95 and Canadian Olympian Martha McCabe was third in 1:10.03.

Atkinson’s best time in the event is 1:06.79. She is in heavy training preparing for this summer’s world championships.

“She had a really good 90 meters and then tightened up,” her longtime SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said. “I was happy with her front end speed. We are trying to make a little step forward.”

Atkinson came close to her best 200-meter freestyle time, swimming only the prelims in 2:07.24, just off her best time of 2:07.06.

SOFLO teammate Melissa Marinheiro, 15, continued her successful 2013 season with a second place in consolation final and 12th overall in the 200-meter freestyle in a best time 2:06.22, dropping from 2:07.50.

“She has definitely been focusing on her training and races,” Anderson said. “It was a very positive swim for her and I can’t wait to see what she does next week fully-rested. She is swimming very well. It was nice to see her go 2:06 for her relay split.”

Bianca Monti, 13, also swam a lifetime best in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:22.93, dropping from 2:24.26.

Melissa Marinheiro, came close to best time in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:06.91, just off her best of 1:06.72.

Delanie Perez, 12, turned in an impressive lifetime-best in the 400-meter individual medley in 5:34.51, dropping from 5:45.45.

Julien Pinon, 14, led the SOFLO boys. Pinon was seventh in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:56.78, just off his best time of 1:56.28. He also swam the 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.44, close to his 1:01.16 best time.

It was Pinon’s first Speedo Champion Series and first final in a major USA Swimming event. Pinon won a Speedo bag for his top eight finish.

“He had a few first-time jitters,” Anderson said.

Pinon, a freshman at American Heritage Plantation, will spend his spring break in France. He leaves Tuesday for training with a French swim club.

SOFLO teammate Jacob Walters, 17, swam a best time in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:04.00, dropping from 2:04.23. He swam another best time in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:00.35, dropping from 1:00.67.

Jordan Colon, 15, finished seventh in the “C” final of the 100-meter breaststroke in a lifetime-best 1:12.63, dropping from 1:13.26.

CJ Kopecki, 13, turned in a lifetime-best in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:05.64, dropping from 1:11.19.

Canadian Olympian Blake Worsley, now training in Florida, won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:51.54, finishing ahead of Ryan Lochte in 1:51.82. It was Worsley’s fastest time of the year. Conor Dwyer never made it to the final after being disqualified in prelims.

Bolles Olympian Joseph Schooling won the 100-meter butterfly in 54.71, ahead Lochte in 55.20.
