SOFLO Leads Senior Championships Going Into Final Day; Atkinson Breaks FGC Record

It will be an exciting finish on the third and final day of the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

After winning the FGC Junior Olympics team title two weeks ago, South Florida Aquatic Club has a shot at history if they add the senior team title to its list of accomplishments.

SOFLO has led the meet the first two days and are in the lead heading into the final day. SOFLO leads the combined team standings with 1,206.50 points. Metro Aquatics is second with 1,159 points.

SOFLO needs to step up in the medley relays if they are to have a shot at the title.

“It’s a great way to motivate our kids,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “They are already swimming fast, they don’t need more incentive, but this might be just special enough to motivate us in the final session.”

With SOFLO’s Marc Rojas, home from Indian River State College for the spring break watching his teammates, SOFLO three-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson had another good night.

Atkinson broke the Florida Gold Coast record in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.56.

SOFLO teammate Jordan Colon finished third in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke in a lifetime-best 2:09.80. It was the first time he cracked 2:10. His previous best was 2:16.85. Colon also swam a best time 4:16.29 in the 400-yard individual medley, dropping from 4:22.44.

“It was a good swim for him,” Anderson said. “Breaking 2:10 he is starting to understand.”

Anderson also praised Kylie Herman who did “a phenomenal job in morning prelims and came back and did even better in the night session.”

Herman was tenth in the 200-yard freestyle in a lifetime-best 1:57.85, dropping from 2:01.81. Herman was also eighth in the 400-yard individual medley in a best time in 4:48.35, dropping from 4:57.68. She also swam a best time 1:03.25 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Melissa Marinheiro was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.81. Maria Lopez was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.78.

Simon Ortiz won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:53.50 in the Area 1, 2, 3 Senior Championships.

“It’s nice to be in this position, the kids have worked hard,” Anderson said. “The two medley relays are our strongest. We have never swept the relays in a championship final.

“Last week we started gaining momentum and hopefully we will finish strong,” Anderson said.”It was really cool when we won JOs. If we could find a way to win Senior Champs, it speaks volumes about the staff.”
