Schwab Top FGC Finisher On Day One Of NCAA Men’s Championships

Nicholas Schwab, who grew up swimming in the Florida Gold Coast, made his final appearance at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Schwab, a senior at Indiana, finished 41st in 4:22.70. His seed time was 4:18.70. Michigan junior Connor Jaeger won the event in 4:10.84.

Schwab was the top Florida Gold Coast finisher in the men’s field. Florida State senior John Jessell was 43rd in 4:23.51. Florida sophomore Carlos Omana was 51st in 4:26.51.

In one of the highlight races, Southern Cal junior Vlad Morozov won the 50-yard freestyle in 18.63.

Stanford’s Kris Ipsen broke the meet record in the 1-meter diving springboard with 473.75, breaking David Boudia’s old mark of 468.65.

University of Florida is sixth after the opening night of competition with 97 points.

The Gators had five top eight finishes. Top finisher was Marcin Cieslak, second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:41.45.

“It was a good first day,” Gators coach Gregg Troy said. “We had someone in the final of all the events tonight. Thought we could have been a little bit better in some spots. Overall, real proud of the guys and the way they raced. It was a good first day.”

Heavily-favored Michigan leads after the first day with 153 points followed by California with 123.5 and Auburn with 112.5.

The meet continues Friday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m.

200-yard individual medley:
