SOFLO Makes More History At This Week’s Speedo Champion Series

South Florida Aquatic Club will add another page to its history of accomplishments at this week’s Speedo Champion Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in Orlando.

A record twenty-five swimmers will represent SOFLO at the meet. It is the largest contingent SOFLO has qualified for the elite meet in the team’s history.

SOFLO will be led by 15 females and 10 males, a combination of college and top age group and high school swimmers.

SOFLO will also compete in a meet record 10 relay events with 20 relay teams.

SOFLO swimmers competing are Endi Babi, 25, Xavier Brown, 18, Roger Capote, 17, Ryan Capote, 15, Jordan Colon, 16, Esteban Diaz-Velasco, 14, Star Fassler, 14, Matthew Gonzalez, 18, Kylie Herman, 16, Kelley Heron, 13, Amber Hunter, 17, CJ Kopecki, 14, Maria Lopez, 17, Juan Lucas, 14, Marcella Marinheiro, 18, Alexander Monti, 15, Carlo Morante, 20, Bianca Muniz, 21, Ivan Parada, 18, Delanie Perez, 13, Alex Rodriguez, 22, Jessica Rodriguez, 14, Marc Rojas, 19, Jonathan Strod, 14, and Gustavo Valery, 15.

The summer portion of the Speedo Champion Series features nine meets held in July and August around the country.

The four-day meet begins on Thursday at the YMCA Aquatic Center’s indoor facility with the distance events and 200-meter medley and freestyle relays.

SOFLO’s Melissa Marinheiro, 16, enjoying her best age group season, is seeded second in the 1500-meter freestyle (17:10.20) and will compete in the meet’s opening event.

The Speedo Champion Series Sectional is the first of two back-to-back meets for SOFLO. Next week SOFLO will compete in the FGC Senior Championships at Coral Springs.

At the Speedo meet, SOFLO will rub elbows with top teams Gator Swim Club, Bolles Swimming and Clearwater among a field of 64 teams and 629 swimmers.

The meet features a fast field.

Among top-seeds are Ashley Neidigh, 18, of Bolles; South African two-time Olympian Sebastien Rousseau of Gator Swim Club, two-time Olympic medalist Arkady Vyatchanin, 29, of New York, Erika Erndl, 35, of T2 Aquatics, Lauren Driscoll, 19, of Swim Fort Lauderdale, Emily Kopas, 16, of Sharks Aquatics and Tasija Karosas, 17, of St. Andrew’s Swimming.

In addition to SOFLO, several Florida Gold Coast teams competing are AK Sharks, Coral Springs Swim Club, Davie Nadadores, Golden Panthers Aquatics, Gulliver, Jupiter, Lake Lytal Lightning, Martin County, Metro Aquatics, Miami County Dade, North Miami, North Palm Beach, Plantation Swim Team, Pompano Beach, St. Andrew’s Swimming, SwimFast, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Wellington and Westminster Academy.
