University School, Host St. Andrew’s Sweep Team Titles At September Splash

September 7, 2013

BOCA RATON–There were a few surprises at the seventh annual September Splash Swimming and Diving Invitational Saturday at the Duff Tyler Aquatic Complex in Boca Raton.

With the high school swimming season only two weeks old and swimmers still in heavy training, there was a 30-year-old school record broken, new boys’ team champion crowned and even a few lifetime-best times.

Benjamin eighth grader Alessandra Baldari making her debut for her new school broke a 30-year-old school record in the 100-yard freestyle in a lifetime-best 53.97. She went out in 26.05 and came home in 27.92 bettering her previous best of 56.90. Baldari was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.90, another best time dropping from 1:02.81.

University School, buoyed by depth and some talented swimmers, won its first boys team title in meet history, edging St. Andrew’s, 359-343, in the 13-team field. The Scots were missing one of its top swimmers and captain Luke Hayhoe.

The meet marked the debut of University School’s first-year coach Katie Byrnes, a former Cardinal Gibbons swimmer who replaced Alex Pussieldi, who retired from high school coaching.

University School boys swept the top three places in the 500-yard freestyle led by individual winner Marco Hosfeld in 4:44.95. Hosfeld also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.53.

Daniel Pereira was also a double winner for University School. He won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.65 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.66.

In the girls competition, the Scots swept all three relays and won five individual events led by double winner Rachael Bradford-Feldman in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.09 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.50.

The Scots overpowered the girls’ field of 15 teams with 430 points to win the team title. Suncoast was second with 274.

“I thought this was a very good meet for us to kick the season off with,” said veteran St. Andrew’s coach Sid Cassidy. “We have been training really hard. We are trying to get a few people fitting into certain places. We had some good seniors depart and we’ve got some great young ones stepping up. It gave us a really good indication of where we are.

“It also shows how strong University School is,” Cassidy said. “They have made some great positive strides this year. I think there are some great teams down here in the south. Certainly, our girls are re-loading and I think our boys are going to be good. I look forward to seeing them again at our regional meet because I think we will match up with them pretty well.”

There were several other outstanding swims during the four-hour timed final meet.

In the boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay, anchor leg Sidrell Williams came from behind to overtake early leader Wellington, outsprinting anchor Cody Cline to win in 3:20.92. Williams was coming off the FINA World Junior Championships in Dubai where he represented Jamaica.

Cline, coming off an impressive summer, won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 54.09, dropping from 54.23. He was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.26.

Abigail Schirmer of Dreyfoos School of the Arts won the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:00.13, dropping from 2:01.

University School’s Emily Kopas was not in the meet lineup. Kopas and South Florida Heat’s Clara Smiddy, both members of the U.S. junior national team, were on a recruiting trip to Michigan.
