SOFLO’s Maria Lopez Earns USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Honors

South Florida Aquatic Club’s Maria Lopez is the total package when it comes to student-athlete.

Lopez, 17, of Hialeah Gardens Senior High School, was named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American team for the 2012-13 season.

Athletes who had grade point averages of 3.5 and higher and achieved the required time standard in a single event as a sophomore, junior or senior were selected.

Lopez has a 4.0 GPA.

Lopez swims year-round in high school and club swimming.

In USA Swimming’s Virtual Club Championships, she was among top ranked swimmers in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events and ranked in the 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter freestyle. Her best events are the 100 and 200 butterfly and 200 IM.

Lopez, born in Havana, Cuba, qualified for the state high school meet as young as her freshman year.

She is currently swimming high school and will compete with her Hialeah Gardens teammates on Wednesday against Ronald Reagan at Miami Springs Aquatic pool at 3:30 p.m.
