It will be a Who’s Who in high school swimming when some of the best around the state converge on Pine Crest’s Schlesinger Aquatics Center Saturday for the 50th annual Woodson Invitational.
South Florida Aquatic Club’s Julien Pinon and Cristian Rossi will be among the field of more than 400 swimmers and divers.
In addition to relays, Pinon is seeded second in the 200-yard freestyle behind Bolles’ Josh Booth and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle behind four Bolles swimmers.
Rossi will swim the 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle.
Perennial power and defending state champion Jacksonville Bolles heads the field of teams. Olympian and national record holder Joseph Schooling of Singapore is among top seeds. He is seeded first in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly.
Some top Bolles swimmers will not compete, looking ahead to next weekend’s Florida FSPA High School Invitational where Bolles broke two national high school records in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Other top teams competing on Saturday are St. Andrew’s, American Heritage, Boca Raton, Gulliver Prep, Suncoast, University School and Ransom-Everglades will compete in the state’s oldest swim meet steeped in history and tradition.
Defending champions are Pine Crest (girls) and Boca Raton (boys). Last year Bolles did not compete among the 16-team field.
Returning to defend their titles are: diver Carolyn Chaney of Pine Crest; Tyla Martin of Pine Crest in the 100-yard butterfly; Caroline Nava of Westminster Academy, 50-yard freestyle; William Pisani of Suncoast, 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke; Hannah Veale of Pine Crest, 100-yard freestyle; Kent Haeffner of Pine Crest, 500-yard freestyle; Lindsey Swartz of Pine Crest, 100-yard breaststroke; and Julie Suarez of Forest Hill, 100-yard backstroke.
A few top swimmers will be missing from the field because of college recruiting trips including University School’s Emily Kopas, a member of the U.S. junior national team who is visiting Duke.
Several alumni have been invited to the meet as VIPs including Stephanie Eisenring, Ann Marshall and Andy Coan.
