For the second time this season, University School boys’ team knocked off perennial powerhouse Pine Crest in the District 11-1A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Nova Southeastern Aquatic Center.

The first time around, Pine Crest was competing without its top swimmer, Harvard-bound Kent Haeffner. This time, the Panthers were at full-strength and still lost.

The Suns finished with 474.5 points to capture their first district title in the team’s history. Pine Crest was second with 451.5 points. Pine Crest had won 25 district titles in the last 26 years.

The Suns were led by double winner Jordy Groters and their winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Groters won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.02 and 100-yard breaststroke in 56.00, both season-bests.

Defending champion Pine Crest won the girls team title with 527 points. Westminster Academy was runner-up with 362.

U.S. junior national team member Emily Kopas won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best 1:04.17, dropping from 1:05.16. The Michigan-bound senior was also fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.32.

Clara Smiddy of South Florida Heat and Marta Ciesla of Pine Crest were double winners.
