St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Team Titles; SOFLO’s Marinheiro Defends Title At BCAA Championships

St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Team Titles; SOFLO’s Marinheiro Defends Title At BCAA Championships

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

October 20, 2013

Defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas swept the boys and girls team titles and three meet records were broken Saturday night at the Broward County Athletic Association Conference Swimming and Diving Championship at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The girls team, buoyed by depth and talent, won seven events and by more than 200 points with 575 points. Cypress Bay was runner-up for the second consecutive year with 355.50 and Fort Lauderdale was third with 341.50.

The boys team, led by double winner Kyle Desrosiers and winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays, won with 435.50 points. Cypress Bay was second with 368 and Nova was third with 355.

It was the second major meet the Raiders swept after winning last month’s Florida Catholic Swimming Championships.

“I thought it would be closer,” St. Thomas boys coach Marty Grady said. “The kids had a very good meet and for the most part we swam better than we did three weeks ago so I am very happy. The meet turned out better than I anticipated. I was a little nervous because I thought there could be three teams that could win.”

Taravella senior and defending champion Alex Evdokimov broke his own meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.38. The previous record was 58.71 he set last year.

The boys breaststroke was the race of the night with Evdokimov, Marco Guarente of Cypress Bay (57.49) and Alex Morgan of West Broward (57.64) stroke-for-stroke fighting for the lead until the final touch. The trio all swam below the previous meet record.

Fort Lauderdale High School sophomore Raphael Marcoux broke two meet records.

Marcoux, 15, won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.36, bettering the previous record of 21.40 set by Ricardo Barbosa in 2005. He also won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.77, breaking the previous record of 47.51 set by Justin Grigull in 2009.

“I wasn’t aware of the records and this wasn’t a meet that I was really looking forward to at the beginning,” the 6-foot-1 Canadian-born Marcoux said. “It turned out better than I thought. I went some pretty good times. As far as my high school meets so far this season, I rate it an 8 or 9.”

Marcoux also anchored the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.74) and 400-yard freestyle relay that was disqualified when a swimmer jumped too quickly.

“I didn’t expect beating my personal-bests in a meet like the BCAAs,” said Marcoux, who was eighth in the 50 freestyle at last year’s state meet and won “B” finals in the 100 freestyle. “I have been swimming pretty well. I am looking forward to the state meet. With the times I went today I am feeling more confident going into districts, regionals and states. Last year I didn’t do as well.”

In the girls competition, St. Thomas senior Mia Fiorenzi was a double winner and the Raiders won all three relays and swept the top three places in the 1-meter springboard diving.

Fiorenzi won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.55 and 100-yard butterfly in 57.78. She was one of only three swimmers to crack 58 seconds.

Several South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers finished among the Top 10. Most of the swimmers were “swimming through” the meet looking ahead to the district, region and state meets over the next four weeks.

SOFLO’s Melissa Marinheiro of West Broward defended her title in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.40, off her meet record of 4:58.07 she swam last year. She was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.14.

“It was a good meet,” Marinheiro said. “I am training and getting excited about states. I felt better this morning. I am not really changing my training for this meet, I am swimming through it.”

The meet also gave SOFLO swimmers the opportunity to swim against competition they will be swimming against in districts. Others picked up valuable racing experience including Juan Lucas, Gustavo Valery and Joshue Kon.

Valery of Flanagan, competing in his second BCAA meet, was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.75.

“I was pretty happy that I dropped my time,” Valery said. “I was a little frustrated but overall I was pretty with what I did. I went 1:50 and was hoping to go a 1:49 and drop to 1:46 by states. I am still trying to do that. I want to try to progressively drop about a second each time I swim.”

After having one BCAA under his belt, Valery felt more comfortable the second time around.

“Last year I was a little nervous,” Valery said. “I didn’t know how to warm up for this kind of meet because it was more fast paced. Now I am a little more used to it and feel a lot better.”

Lucas of Pembroke Pines Charter was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 57.93 and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.13.

“My freestyle and backstroke are improving,” Lucas said. “I felt good in the water tonight. There were a lot of waves with all those bigger kids.

“I came in wanting to get the experience of swimming in big meets like this against the best swimmers,” Lucas said. “I have been lowering my times and I am faster than last year so I am happy.

“I am happiest with my 100 back because of my stroke and the competition. I wasn’t too happy with my 100 back tonight. I didn’t feel good but I lowered my time a little bit. I am fine with my swims. I am getting excited and looking forward to districts.”

Kon was sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.48 and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.39.

“I am pretty happy, I dropped four seconds from my morning time,” Kon said. “This is my last year because I am a senior. I am just trying to have fun and ultimately the goal is to make states. I want to go hard at districts and regionals. I have been more consistent in practices and training well.”

Other Top 10 SOFLO finishers were:

Amber Hunter of West Broward, third, 100-yard butterfly, 59.94 after going 59.46 in prelims; fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:02.42.

Kylie Herman of Cypress Bay, sixth, 100-yard backstroke, 1:06.56.

Lilli Calero of Pembroke Pines Charter, eighth, 500-yard freestyle, 5:36.75 and ninth, 200-yard freestyle, 2:06.16.

Bowie Suen of Cypress Bay, tenth, 200-yard individual medley, 2:12.00.

Blake Kelley of Pembroke Pines Charter, tenth, 100-yard butterfly, 55.78.

Alex Monti of West Broward, top morning qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.00, eighth in 5:08.40. He was also 11th in 1:07.82.

Fernando Quintero of Flanagan, tenth, 100-yard backstroke, 1:05.27.

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Wins Gold, Bronze Medals In FINA World Cup Opening Day In Doha

SOFLO’s Alia Atkinson Wins Gold, Bronze Medals In FINA World Cup Opening Day In Doha

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

October 20, 2013

Alia Atkinson flirted with another world record Sunday on the FINA World Cup Series opening day in Doha, Qatar.

The three-time Jamaican Olympian from the South Florida Aquatic Club won the 100-meter breaststroke Sunday in 1:03.38 and pocketed another $1,500 for first.

For the second consecutive meet, Atkinson, 24, was making a run at the world record at the halfway mark but ran out of gas in the final 25 meters. She also just missed the record in Dubai last week.

Atkinson finished ahead of Russian Yulia Efimova whose time was a distant 1:04.68. Atkinson went out in 29.63. It was Atkinson’s third win in five breaststroke races during this year’s series.

Atkinson took a bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:07.30 and added another $500. She also swam the 50-meter backstroke and finished 16th in 29.70.

On Monday, Atkinson will compete in the 50-meter breaststroke and 100-meter individual medley, where she will plans to go after the world record.

If Atkinson can earn the best performance of the meet, she could pick up significant bonus points which will determine who will be awarded the $153,000 in cluster money that will be distributed after the Doha meet.

Atkinson currently is ranked third with 968 points for her 1:03.38 100 breaststroke swim. Only each swimmer’s best time is considered.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu is first with 979 points and Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina is second with 972 points.

The top three performances at each series stop earns bonus points.

In Dubai, Atkinson earned the top performance honors for her 1:02.91 100 breaststroke time to total 990 points, 30 points ahead of Zevina and is ranked third overall in the current point standings (135 points).

Atkinson will not compete on the final three series legs in Singapore (Nov. 5-6), Tokyo (Nov. 9-10) and Beijing (Nov. 13-14). She is expected to return home on Wednesday morning with her SOFLO coach Chris Anderson.

In other Sunday performances:

Women’s 800-meter freestyle: Spain’s Mireia Belmonte won in 8:14.18. Teammate Melanie Costa was second in 8:17.66.

SOFLO’s Atkinson Wins Gold, Silver Medals, Breaks Another National Record On Day Two In Dubai

SOFLO’s Atkinson Wins Gold, Silver Medals, Breaks Another National Record On Day Two In Dubai

WRITTEN BY SHARON ROBB

October 18, 2013

Alia Atkinson of the South Florida Aquatic Club continued her winning ways on the final day of the FINA World Cup Series in Dubai.

The three-time Olympian from Jamaica, having the meet of her life, won the 100-meter individual medley in 58.45, bettering her own national record in a lifetime-best.

Atkinson was fifth at the 50-meter mark. Her time moved her from fourth to second in the world rankings behind Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu.

Atkinson also took silver in the 50-meter breaststroke in 29.38. Atkinson is ranked second in the world in the event in 29.21.

Atkinson had the better start in the race (by .11 seconds) but Russian world champion Yuliya Efimova sprinted at the finish to win in 29.27.

Atkinson picked up another $1,500 for a gold medal and totaled $4,000 for the two-day Dubai meet. After four meets she has won $12,500, eighth highest among women.

Atkinson and Jeanette Ottesen-Gray of Denmark are tied for sixth with 57 points, but the tiebreaker is the swimmer with the higher number of ranking points in any of the cluster’s leg. Ottesen-Gray’s 36 points from Eindhoven trumps Atkinson’s 30 points from Eindhoven as the top single leg point tally.

On the opening day, Atkinson broke her own national record and came within a half-second of breaking the world record in the 100-meter breaststroke in a lifetime best 1:02.91. She was also sixth in the 50-meter backstroke in 27.82.

Leading World Cup money winners are Katinka Hosszu of Hungary with $132,750 and Chad LeClos of South Africa with $68,500. So far, $700,000 in prize money has been awarded.
