SOFLO Fine Tunes In Second Day Action At Area 2 Meet

July 13, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers got in some solid racing against the boys and girls competition Saturday in the Florida Gold Coast Area 2 Long Course Developmental Championship Meet at Sunrise Civic Center.

Several swimmers, tuning up for next week’s 14-and-under Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics in Plantation, got the opportunity to fine tune while racing against some of the top age group swimmers in the FGC.

Sarah Acevedo, 10, was a double winner. Acevedo won the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 1:35.92 and 50-meter butterfly in 42.11, another best time.

Daniela Barreto, 10, won the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:45.83.

Sophia Bedoya, 11, won the 50-meter freestyle in a best time 33.20.

SOFLO’s girls’ 13-14 200-meter freestyle relay won in 2:06.73 with teammates Isabel Shashaty, Zariya Harris, Abolade Oyetnji and Mikaela De Gracia.

Juan Osorio, 14, won the 100-meter backstroke in a best 1:10.54 just ahead of teammate Samuel Quintero, 13 in 1:11.24, also a best time.

Quintero won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:20.28.

SOFLO took two of the top three spots in the boys 13-14 200-meter freestyle relay. SOFLO’s A team won in 1:57.38 with Juan Osorio, Bryant Segui, Samuel Quintero and Andres Arias) and SOFLO’s B team was third in 2:11.43 with Sebastian Simko, Wyatt Jennessee, Brandon Moran and Ethan Hew.

SOFLO Continues To Do Well At Speedo Zone Sectional Championships

July 12, 2014—Swimming against some of the nation’s top clubs is bringing out the best in South Florida Aquatic Club at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone South Sectional Championships at the Orlando YMCA.

“We are holding our own with these very good clubs and doing a good job,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said.

Going into the fourth and final day, SOFLO’s women’s team is fourth overall. SOFLO is seventh in the combined team standings.

Among SOFLO’s top performers on Saturday was Melissa Marinheiro.

Marinheiro, 17, posted a best time in the 100-meter backstroke during morning prelims in 1:07.98 dropping 3.58 seconds. She came back in the final dropping more time in 1:06.70, another 1.28-second drop to finish 26th overall.

Marinheiro also qualified for the “A” final of the 400-meter freestyle. She finished eighth in 4:22.25. In prelims she went 4:20.88, just off her best time of 4:20.69.

Kathleen Golding won the “C” final of the 200-meter individual medley in 2:24.41, just off her best time. She also won the “C” heat of the 400-meter freestyle in 4:26.30.

Ronald Santos made his second swim in the 400-meter freestyle and finished the “D” final in 4:12 after going 4:10.66 in prelims.

Three-time Olympian Alia Atkinson swam the breaststroke in the 50-meter freestyle event to work on her stroke count in the sprint event. It is one of three events she will be swimming in the Commonwealth Games later this month and it was an opportunity to get in another fine tuning race.

With the men’s team winning four of five events including the final relay, the Gator Swim Club is pulling away in the combined teams race.

On the third day of action, the Gator Swim Club leads with 682 points ahead of first-day leader Scarlet Aquatics of New Jersey with 472 and St. Andrew’s Swimming with 366.

South Florida Aquatic Club is seventh overall with 223 points.

The Gator Swim Club has all but clinched the men’s team title with 468 points. Scarlet Aquatics is a distant third with 198 and Club Seminole is third with 180. Scarlet Aquatics leads the women’s team standings with 274 just 60 points ahead of Gator Swim Club. St. Andrew’s Swimming is third with 207.

Sebastien Rousseau, 23, Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez, 20, and Dan Wallace, 21, won individual events for the Gator Swim Club.

Rousseau won the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 55.33, lowering his previous best of 57.49.

Solaeche-Gomez won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:00.74.

Wallace won the 400-meter freestyle in 3:53.03 ahead of teammates Andrea D’Arrigo, 19, in 3:53.40.

Jian Wang, Solaeche-Gomez, Marcin Cieslak and Pawel Werner combined to win the 400-meter medley relay in 3:44.44.

Florida Gold Coast’s top finisher was Clara Smiddy of AquaKids Sharks winning the 100-meter backstroke in 1:01.69, just off her best time of 1:00.51 and ahead of two-time Olympian Katie Hoff, 25, of Hurricanes Swimming in 1:02.50.

Other individual winners were:

Justine Bowker, 27, of T2 Aquatics won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:15.70 finishing ahead of Olympian Elizabeth Beisel, 21, of Bluefish in 2:16.35.

Natalie Hinds, 20, the 2013 SEC Female Freshman of the Year at University of Florida from City of Midland Swim Team won the 50-meter freestyle in 25.42. Katie Hoff was third in a best time 26.21, bettering her previous best of 27.11.

Florida alum Bradley deBorde, 22, of Patriot Aquatics won the 50-meter freestyle in 22.98.

Stephanie Peacock, 22, of SWIM won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:12 just ahead of Jessica Thielman, 20, of Gator Swim Club in 4:12.09.

The four-day meet concludes on Sunday. Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals are 4 p.m.

Sunday’s events are the women’s 800-meter freestyle, men’s 1500-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly, 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter breaststroke, 200-meter backstroke and 400-meter freestyle relays.
