July 25, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ryan Capote was top finisher on opening night of the Florida Gold Coast Senior Long Course Championships Friday at the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions in Coral Springs.

Capote, 16, finished third in the 100-meter freestyle in a lifetime best 54.22, lowering his previous best of 55.86. He first lowered his time in prelims in 54.78, fourth fastest time of the morning.

SOFLO teammate Juan Lucas won the “B” final of the 200-meter backstroke in 2:13.82, just off his best time of 2:13.55.

Despite several non-Florida Gold Coast teams dominating events, it was a good night for FGC swimmers.

Nicole Urquidi of Gulliver Swimming was a double winner. Urquidi, 16, won the 100-meter freestyle in 57.94 and 400-meter freestyle in 4:19.66. Urquidi lowered her best time of 59.07 in the 100 freestyle prelims in 59.41.

Gulliver Swimming’s third individual title was Nick Carter, 24, in the 200-meter backstroke in a best time 2:06.41, lowering his previous best of 2:10.08. He first lowered it in prelims in 2:09.80.

Azura Florida Aquatics won two individual titles and one relay title. Azura is the top Florida Gold Coast team in the boys’ competition, leading with 177 points. Empire Swimming leads the combined and girls team totals.

Jennifer Marquez, 23, won the 100-meter freestyle in a best time 56.88, dropping from 58.15.

Joe Ortiz, 22, won the 100-meter freestyle in a best time 51.32, dropping from 51.93.

Azura Florida Aquatics won the 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:32.81 with Arvin Moradi, Joe Ortiz, Mateo Gonzalez and Marcelo Acosta.

Pine Crest Swimming won three individual titles.

Mike Schreuders, 15, won the 100-meter freestyle in a best time 51.80, dropping from 53.03.

University of Missouri-bound Jordy Groters, 18, won the 50-meter breaststroke in 29.16, bettering his previous best by 1/100th of a second.

Alexander Graudins, 23, won the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 3:55.52, dropping from 3:56.86.

University of Michigan-bound Emily Kopas, 17, of Swim Fort Lauderdale won the 50-meter breaststroke in 32.78.

Jupiter Dragons’ Alex Cronin, 16, won the 400-meter freestyle in a best time 4:07.35, a huge time drop from 4:16.62. He first lowered it in prelims in 4:11.14.

Westminster Academy won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:35.91 with Logan Lassley, Anthon Barbar, Andrew Halliburton and Zachary Trosper.

The three-day meet continues on Saturday with prelims at 8 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
