August 1, 2014—Rafael Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club is going to need another suitcase for the trip home.

Rodriguez won his fourth gold medal Friday at the USA Swimming Southern Zone Age Group Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Rodriguez, 12, won the 100-meter freestyle in a best time 57.46, dropping 1.43 seconds from his previous best 58.89. He first bettered his time in prelims in 58.57 to earn the top seed. He also took a bronze as anchor leg on the 11-12 200-meter medley relay.

Andrea Santander of Gulliver Swimming won her fifth gold medal of the meet. Santander, 12, won the 11-12 100-meter freestyle in a best time 59.04, dropping 0.85 seconds off her previous best of 59.89.

Florida Gold Coast’s third victory of the night was in the boys’ 15-18 400-meter freestyle. Alexander Arrieta, 16, of Metro Aquatics won in a best time 4:05.38, bettering his previous best of 4:10.39 by 5.01 seconds.

Florida Gold Coast is having one of its finest showings in meet history. It’s also Rodriguez best zone meet performance.

Florida Swimming is second in the combined team standings with 627 points. Florida Gold Coast is fifth with 364.

Florida Swimming is second and Florida Gold Coast is third among boys teams. Florida Swimming girls are third with 295 and Florida Gold Coast girls are fifth with 144.

The Zone Championships feature top regional swimmers at the age group level. The meet ends on Saturday.
