SOFLO Swimmers Play Big Role In Pembroke Pines Charter’s Success At Four-Team Meet

September 16, 2014—Pembroke Pines Charter boys won two dual meets and tied St. Thomas Aquinas for the first time in the swim program’s history Tuesday night.

Pembroke Pines Charter boys, led by double winner Juan Lucas of South Florida Aquatic Club and coached by Rose Lockie, a Top Ten finalist for ASCA Age Group Coach of the Year, tied St. Thomas Aquinas, 51-51, and defeated Piper, 85-4, and Coconut Creek, 87-9.

St. Thomas Aquinas also defeated Piper, 79-4, and Coconut Creek, 82-11.

Lucas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.08, 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.20 and led off the winning 200-yard medley relay. Lucas was joined by teammates Tyler Gibson, Andres Lares and Ryan Capote on the relay.

SOFLO’s Andre Lares won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.95 followed by teammate Bruno Berti in 1:04.26.

Lares, Matthew Menocal, Capote, Nikolas Ujueta, Brandon Fratianni, Bruno Berti, Tyler Gibson, Ryan Capote and Noah Hernandez all placed in individual or relay events.

Esteban Velasquez and Gabriel Perez-Silva each won two events for St. Thomas Aquinas. The Raiders also won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Pembroke Pines Charter also defeated Piper, 90-1, and Coconut Creek, 90-3. St. Thomas Aquinas girls defeated Piper, 90-1; Pembroke Pines Charter, 65-37 and Coconut Creek, 90-3.

SOFLO girls also played a key role in keeping their dual meet against St. Thomas Aquinas close.

Kelley Heron of Pembroke Pines Charter won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.69 and was second in the 100-yard breaststroke and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Lilli Calero, Victoria Hill, Andrea Melendez, Katherine DeBarros, Leysha Caraballo and Maya Hirian all placed in the top three in individual or relay events.

St. Thomas Aquinas won the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay and had seven individual winners including diver Karlee Price with 301.90 points and sisters Isabella and Vanessa Comunale.
