October 3, 2014—Rafael Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club broke a Florida Gold Coast short course record Friday night at the Friday Distance Meet at Academic Village Pool.
Seeded first in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:31.45, Rodriguez won the event in a record 4:19.90, shaving 11.55 minutes off his previous best in one of his most impressive swims of his young career.
The previous FGC record was 4:24.39 set by Rockway’s Juan Sequera on Sept. 15, 2006. It was Rodriguez’ first 11-12 short course yards FGC record.
SOFLO teammate Molly Golding, 11, was the first girl finisher and third overall in 5:04.12 in the mixed event.
The meet was suspended during the 1,650-yard freestyle because of inclement weather. Swimmers have the option to swim it either Saturday or Sunday.
The IMX-IMR Challenge gets under way Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Florida Gold Coast clubs competing are Boca Raton Swim Team, AquaKids Sharks, Metro Aquatics, Kendall, Coral Springs Swim Club, North Miami and Hialeah Storm in addition to host SOFLO.
