Pine Crest Girls Win Battle Of Unbeatens, Ending St. Andrew’s Win Streak By One Point

October 7, 2014—In one of the most exciting two-county high school meets of the season, Pine Crest girls team won the battle of the unbeatens with a thrilling 93-92 victory over longtime rival St. Andrew’s on Tuesday at the Duff Tyler Aquatic Complex in Boca Raton.

It is the first time in three years the Scots (10-1) have been defeated. The last time St. Andrew’s lost a dual meet was to Pine Crest in October 2011.

Pine Crest, on the strength of its depth and divers, led by All-American Carolyn Chaney sweeping the top three spots, improved to 8-0.

Chaney won the 1-meter event with 291.60 points followed by teammates Juliette Pozzuoli (249.30) and Ali Watson (237.30).

Pine Crest was led by double winner and University of Florida-bound Tyla Martin. The senior won the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:56.55, dropping from 1:57.36.

Martin also won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.58.

Marta Ciesla, recently invited to the Oct. 23-25 USA Swimming National Select Camp in Colorado Springs, won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.64.

St. Andrew’s was led by double winners Virginia-bound Megan Moroney and Louisville-bound Rachael Bradford-Feldman. Moroney won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.81, just off her lifetime-best, and 100-yard backstroke in 57.66. Bradford-Feldman won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.02 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.67.

The Scots swept all three relays and five individual events.

“We were looking to go three years undefeated in a row with this team,” said St. Andrew’s coach Sid Cassidy, who apologized for the scoring error.

“It was a very good meet,” Cassidy said. “We actually swam very well. We won five individual events and won all three relays.”

At first it was announced that St. Andrew’s girls had won by one point, but after the meet a scoring error was discovered with the diving and Pine Crest was awarded the win.

St. Andrew’s had no problem winning the boys’ dual meet, 105-80. The Scots also swept all three boys relays and relied on its depth.

The Scots were led by individual double winner Nick Sharp in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.83 and 100-yard backstroke 54.74.

Pine Crest’s John Graner won the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:51.98 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.90.
