SOFLO’s Marc Rojas “Living The Dream” At Florida State

By Sharon Robb

November 28, 2014—Marc Rojas came home for Thanksgiving holiday to spend time with family, friends, teammates and coaches at South Florida Aquatic Club.

Rojas, 20, is enjoying his first season competing in NCAA Division I swimming at Florida State.

Now a junior, Rojas spent his first two seasons at national champion Indian River State College. He was an NJCAA national champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 2013 posting a career-best 15:38.80.

In high school, he was the first sophomore ever to win a state high school title at Pembroke Pines Charter in 2009.

Now he hopes to add to his swimming resume over the next two seasons working with second-year FSU head coach Frankie Bradley, a former St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Pine Crest club swimmer, Florida State swimmer and former Auburn associate head coach and Indian River head coach.

FSU is a Division I program on the rise and back in the college swimming spotlight under Bradley’s guidance.

The transition from club and his first two years of college swimming to a Division I team took time, Rojas admitted.

“I really just got adjusted maybe three weeks ago,” Rojas said. “It took me a while training-wise. The program is really tough and it challenges you. I love that stuff.

“It’s a new environment, new coaches and I am learning things every day,” Rojas said. “My swimming is improving.”

In the Seminoles’ recent 168-119 victory over Florida Southern, Rojas was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.24 with a 1:01.83 split.

“I am definitely excited about the future,” Rojas said. “I knew I wanted to go to Florida State. I took my trip there and I told myself this is the place. This is the place where I feel I am going to excel the most. I love it there. I am so thankful to be there. I worked very hard and it’s all paying off.

“It is a dream come true.”

Rojas is enjoying the perks that come with being a college athlete including the athletic cafeteria with healthy food geared toward elite athletes. “I go for the yogurt, fruit and bagels between classes all the time,” he said with a smile.

Rojas is competing in his specialty breaststroke and freestyle events and relays.

“I want to see what I can do,” Rojas said. “It’s great training with all these quality athletes along with the pros like (FSU alum) Pavel Sankovich (of Belarus) and Jared Pike (of the United Kingdom).

“It’s cool when you see the pros coming here to train with Frank. Being around those athletes you can see the way they train. We can train with them and it makes you better.”

The Seminoles next meet is the Dec. 5-7 Georgia Invite in Athens, Ga. FSU also has a training trip scheduled at Indian River.

The biggest meets of the season Rojas is looking forward to are the Feb. 25-28 Men’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in Atlanta and March 26-28 Men’s NCAA Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.

“This is a top tier team and we have big goals for ourselves,’ Rojas said. “We don’t mess around, we don’t play any games. This is the real deal. This is what I have been looking for. This is where greatness happens.”

Rojas returns to Tallahassee this weekend. He was happy to get a chance to see his SOFLO teammates and SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson and age group coach Rose Lockie of Pembroke Pines Charter, who made a huge difference in his life.

“The relationships I built here are going to last forever,” Rojas said.

South Florida Aquatic Club Wins Combined, Women’s Team Titles At Speedo Winter Championships

By Sharon Robb

November 23, 2013—Defending champion South Florida Aquatic Club swept the combined and women’s team titles for the second year in a row at the 24th annual Speedo Winter Championships Sunday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

SOFLO was the only team to score more than 2,000 points among a record field of 1,382 swimmers and 75 teams with 2,097 points. Azura Florida Aquatics was second with 1,412 and Pine Crest Swim Team was third with 1,240. Only three teams cracked the 1,000 point mark.

SOFLO was the only women’s team to score more than 1,000 points with 1,055 points. Pine Crest Swim Team was runner-up with 736 and North Palm Beach was third with 532 points.

Azura Florida Aquatics won the men’s team title with 1,066 points, a 24-point margin over SOFLO, second with 1,042 points.

“It’s always tougher to win it the second time around, more people are after us because we have established ourselves as one of the stronger clubs in the area,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said. “I am extremely excited for our team to win an entire meet like this when there are so many athletes and teams competing.

“We had so many athletes do well that it was our total group of swimmers who stood out,” Anderson said. “We had more firsts and top three places than we have ever had in history. It’s also a true testament how our coaches identify the talent and improve the talent so they are champions.”

SOFLO’s Rafael Rodriguez, 12, broke his fourth Florida Gold Coast record. He broke in the 200-yard individual medley twice on the final day of competition. He first broke the record in a lifetime-best 2:03.04, shaving 1.70 off his previous best of 2:04.74 and nearly 9 seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Leonardo Mateus.

Rodriguez came back at night to break his own record in 2:02.86, a 0.18 drop. “That was a solid swim, he had a great meet,” Anderson said.

Rodriguez finished with 11 individual and relay victories including the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:32.68 on the final day.

SOFLO broke seven Florida Gold Coast LSC and Open records over three days of the four-day meet. Three-time Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson broke two records and Isabella Di Salvo, Jacqueline Lugo, Kyana Castro and Vanessa Mesa broke the 11-12 200-yard freestyle relay.

SOFLO was led by six high point winners: Joseph Lee, 11, and Michael Arias, 11, tied with 69 points; Vanessa Mesa, 12, with 66 points; Rafael Rodriguez, 12, with 77 points; Kathleen Golding, 14, with 71 points; Melissa Marinheiro, 17, with 62 points.

It was the most high point winners SOFLO has had in a major meet in the team’s history.

SOFLO’s individual girl champions on the final day were Vanessa Mesa in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley; Kathleen Golding in the 100-yard freestyle; and Kelley Heron in the 200-yard individual medley.

SOFLO boys dominated the 1,650-yard freestyle event sweeping the top three places in 11-and-under with Joseph Lee, Nicolas Rossi and John Paul Handal; Rodriguez and Mateus finishing one-two in the 12-year-old category; and Kevin Porto winning the 14 title.

Rodriguez also won the 50-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley; Michael Arias won the 100-yard freestyle and Joseph Lee won the 200-yard individual medley.

“As a group we have been talking about the maturity and athleticism of our athletes and it showed in this meet,” Anderson said.

“We have to take our hats off for the men’s team. They did great overall. We were extremely solid in the mile. They swam all best times and every age group was represented which is huge.

“This is just a great way to end the season as a group for sure. I don’t know when our entire team, from the 8-year-olds to the open will come together again so I am extremely excited for them. Our staff did a wonderful job. They are confident in executing our training and it’s really starting to pay off.”

SOFLO men’s team competed without Timothy Wynter on Sunday. The Jamaican swimmer was treated for dehydration. SOFLO was also without one of its top swimmers, Julien Pinon, competing overseas in the French nationals.

SOFLO Breaks Five Florida Gold Coast Records On Day Three Of Speedo Winter Championships

By Sharon Robb

November 22, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club broke five Florida Gold Coast records to highlight action at the 24th annual Speedo Winter Championships Saturday at rainy, windswept Plantation Aquatic Complex.

Rafael Rodriguez, 12, broke two FGC records and one FGC Open record in the 100-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly and Jamaican Olympian Alia Atkinson 25, shredded her own FGC and Open records in the 100-yard individual medley.

Rodriguez first broke the 11-12 100-yard individual medley record during morning prelims in a lifetime-best 57.28, dropping 0.58. The FGC record was 57.36 held by Adrian Aguilar and FGC open record is 56.36 held by Manuel Lopez.

Rodriguez came back in finals to break his own FGC record again in 57.15.

Rodriguez also won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.67, both a FGC and Open records 55.67 breaking SOFLO teammate Ervin Marin’s previous record. Marin was the first to congratulate Rodriguez after he got out of the pool.

“I am happy the most with the butterfly,” Rodriguez said. “It was something I really wanted to get because every time I would get so close to record but never got it. I’m pretty happy, it felt good.

“Coming into the meet I wanted to get the records I never got in some of my events. This is definitely my best Winter Champs.”

Atkinson, in her final tune-up before the Dec. 3-7 Short Course World Championships in Doha, broke her own record in the 100-yard individual medley in a lifetime-best 54.41.

The other SOFLO records of the night was three-time Olympian Alia Atkinson, 25, who won the 100-yard individual medley in FGC LSC and Open records in 54.41 in a non-tech suit.

On Sunday, Atkinson will swim only the 50-yard breaststroke and scratch from finals. She will work on her starts, warm down and then do a workout.

SOFLO now has six FGC records over three days. On Friday, the girls’ 11-12 200-yard freestyle relay team of Isabella Di Salvo, Jacqueline Lugo, Kyana Castro, and Vanessa Mesa broke the FGC record in 1:44.41

SOFLO, looking to repeat as champions, is sitting pretty going into the fourth and final day of competition. SOFLO leads the combined team totals with 1,619 points. Azura Florida Aquatics is second with 1,041 and Pine Crest is third with 952.

SOFLO leads the women’s team totals with 821 followed by Pine Crest with 566 and North Palm Beach with 407.

The battle for the boys team title will come down to SOFLO and Azura. SOFLO has a slim lead with 798 points. Azura trails by only 12 points.

“Tonight was a brilliant night,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said. “We really showed our depth. It’s nice to have the younger athletes here. A lot more younger kids were here tonight and it was a real nice SOFLO team atmosphere.

“I told our coaches I don’t know when our entire team will get together like this again. I told them to enjoy Sunday’s fast swimming.”

Vanessa Mesa, 12, 200-yard freestyle, 1:59.84, best time.

SOFLO Breaks Florida Gold Coast Record On Day Two Of Speedo Winter Championships

By Sharon Robb

November 21, 2014—Defending champion South Florida Aquatic Club broke its first Florida Gold Coast record of the 24th annual Speedo Winter Championships Friday at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The girls’ 11-12 200-yard freestyle relay team of Isabella Di Salvo, Jacqueline Lugo, Kyana Castro, and Vanessa Mesa broke the record in 1:44.41

“I am extremely excited to see a bunch of younger girls step it up as far as sprint freestyle,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said. “It’s never been one of our strong suits but having four girls go under 25 and 26 splits speaks volumes for what they are doing.”

SOFLO remains in the lead after two days of competition. SOFLO leads the combined team standings with 983 points, ahead of Azura Florida Aquatics and Pine Crest Swim Team, tied for second with 561 points.

SOFLO girls leads the girls standings with 524 points ahead of Pine Crest with 329 and the boys lead Azura, 459-444.

“We performed as a team tonight with a positive attitude, we are in very good shape,” Anderson said. “We are starting to get higher quality swims. The 200 backstroke was amazing with Timothy Wynter, Melissa Marinheiro, Kelley Heron and Kayla Cunningham all winning made a huge statement. We had our big four guys (Esteban Diaz-Velasco, Juan Lucas, Ryan Capote and Alredo Mesa) in the finals which is pretty solid.”

Wynter, an up-and-coming Jamaican swimmer, topped a good field to win the open 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.38 ahead of Diogo Fassina and Mateo Gonzalez.

Marinheiro won the 200-yard backstroke in a lifetime-best 2:05.00 in an exciting race just out-touching St. Andrew’s Rachael Bradford-Feldman (2:05.84). Heron won the 15-16 200 backstroke in 2:07.00 and Kayla Cunningham, 11, won the 200-yard backstroke in a best time 2:19.54 to win her age group.

“Our younger age groupers today were brilliant,” Anderson said. “They did a really nice job, stepping it up and executing best times overall. I looke at our senior program and the boys are really starting to emerge as one of the stronger men’s programs. It’s starting to really come together.”

Other notable swims:

Leonardo Mateus won three gold medals in the 500-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle relay and one silver in the 200 backstroke. His younger brother Alejandro Mateus, was the only nine-year-old in the 200-yard individual medley final to drop more than six seconds. He also swam a lifetime-best in the 500-yard freestyle.

Molly Golding won the 200-yard breaststroke in a best time 2:36.36.

Michael Arias won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.98 followed by teammate Joseph Lee in 5:27.73. Arias also won the 50-yard freestyle in a best time 26.00.

Florida Swim Network is live-streaming the finals Saturday and Sunday.

SOFLO Shines On Day One Of Speedo Winter Championships

By Sharon Robb

November 20, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club took an early lead after Day One of the 24th annual Florida Gold Coast Speedo Winter Swimming Championships Thursday at the Plantation Aquatic Complex.

The defending champion leads the combined team standings with 312 points and girls team totals with 174 points.

In a shocker, SOFLO knocked off Pine Crest and Miami Swimming to win the 800-yard freestyle in 7:41.53 with Kelley Heron, Melissa Marinheiro, Jessica Rodriguez and Kylie Herman. It was the team’s most impressive swim of the night.

Pine Crest’s relay featured Lydia Musleh, Lindsey Swartz, Sabrina Gornisiewicz and Caroline Nava and Miami Swimming had Kyla Valls, Laine Morgan, Hannah Cordes and Carlota Verita.

“They really did step it up,” said SOFLO coach Chris Anderson. “They are pretty solid when they come together. Our team had a very solid first day of the meet and established a little bit of confidence that will go a long way.”

SOFLO had two individual girls winners in the 400-yard individual medley. Jessica Rodiguez won the 15-16 in a best time 4:34.46 and Kathleen Golding in 4:23.47. Marinheiro was also second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:21.24.

SOFLO boys, third among the boys field with 147 points behind Azura and Metro Aquatics, also had some outstanding swims.

“Our boys took a real step forward,” Anderson said.

The 800-yard freestyle relay of Timothy Wynter, Ryan Capote, CJ Kopecki and Jordan Colon was second in 6:55.40, just 1.2 seconds off the national cut.

“No one expected us to finish in the top five never mind second place,” said an excited Anderson. “Ervin had a heck of a swim in the 400 IM. It was a good solid session for us. We really did perform.”

Ervin Marin won the 15-16 400-yard individual medley in 4:07.57 and Leonardo Mateus won the 11-12 400 IM in best time 4:34.21.

The meet continues on Friday with prelims and finals.

A record 1,382 swimmers and 75 teams are competing during the four-day meet, the state’s largest age group meet and one of the nation’s largest LSC meets.

Florida Swim Network will broadcast the finals live on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bolles Tradition Continues, Sweeps Team Titles; Chaney, Moroney Make History; Pine Crest Girls Win Battle For Second

By Sharon Robb

November 15, 2014—Jacksonville Bolles continued its winning tradition by sweeping the boys and girls team titles Saturday night at the Pinch-A-Penny FHSAA State 1A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

The boys team won its 27th consecutive team title with 495.5 points, more than doubling runner-up Sarasota Cardinal Mooney with 165 points.

The girls won their 27th state title overall and 24th consecutive title with 425 points.

Pine Crest, buoyed by four individual state titles, won the battle for second with 231 points ahead of longtime rival St. Andrew’s girls, third with 179.5 points. The Scots boys team was fifth with 130 points.

Pine Crest senior Carolyn Chaney made diving history when she became only the fifth diver in Florida high school history to win four consecutive state championships. The University of Miami-bound Chaney won the girls 1-meter springboard diving title with 498.60 points.

St. Andrew’s senior Megan Moroney also added a page to the history books by winning her fourth consecutive title in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.96, just 1/100th ahead of Trinity Prep’s Claire Maiocco for an exciting finish. Moroney is only the 11th swimmer to accomplish the feat since 1920, and first since Atlantic alum and Olympian Rhi Jeffrey won her fourth 100-yard freestyle title in 2003.

“Completing the sweep is something very special, something very few people have done,” said her longtime coach Sid Cassidy.

Moroney also won her third consecutive state title in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.89) to finish with seven individual state titles, tied for fifth most on the state all-time and second most since the rules changed in 1945 limiting swimmers to two individual events.

Moroney also led off the Scots second-place 400-yard freestyle relay that finished in 3:26.66 with teammates Rachael Bradford-Feldman, Chelsea Scuderi and CJ McCartin.

Broward County divers swept the top four spots in girls diving. Freshman Johanna Holloway of Westminster Academy was second (438.75), University School seventh grader Maia Goldstein was third (427.95) and eighth grader Ali Watson of Pine Crest was fourth (417.10).

Pine Crest captured both diving titles with Austin Fields repeating as state boys champion with 490.45 points.

Pine Crest had two other state champions with three titles.

Sophomore sprinter Marta Ciesla, a runner-up last year, won the 50-yard freestyle against a stacked field in 22.60, just off the 2002 state record of 22.30. Ciesla also defended her title in the 100-yard freestyle, winning in 49.57. She was the only swimmer to crack 50 seconds.

In an exciting, close race, Pine Crest senior Lindsay Swartz won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.78, out-touching top-seeded Bradford-Feldman, second in 1:03.99.

Swartz was also a member of the Panthers’ second place 200-yard medley relay that finished in 1:43.11 with teammates Miriyam Ghali, Tyla Martin and Ciesla.

Pine Crest was third in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:36.09 with Ciesla, Brooke Bernstein, Martin and Jamie Flores

Sagemont senior Mateo Gonzalez was Broward County’s only boys double winner and he knocked off two Bolles swimmers to do it.

Gonzalez won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.65. The field also featured his Azura teammates Fernando Alatorre of Sagemont, fourth in 1:52.24 and Daniel Pereira of University School, eighth in 1:54.64.

Gonzalez also won the 100-yard butterfly in 48.06, knocking off top seed Javier Barrena of Bolles, second in 49.19.

After morning prelims, Bolles boys secured eight top seeds including the top three qualifying spots in the 100-yard freestyle.

Bolles girls had only two top seeds in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. St. Andrew’s had four top seeds and Pine Crest earned three top seeds.

Bolles swept all three boys and girls relays to compile 120 points each.

Bolles’ Tyler Rice won his first state title in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.81. Andrea Vergani won the 100-yard freestyle in 44.29 followed by Rice in 44.88. James Daugherty won the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.27.

American Heritage Sweeps Relays, Wins Second State 2A Boys Title With SOFLO’s Pinon, Kopecki

By Sharon Robb

November 14, 2014—On a chilly, wind-swept night, American Heritage Plantation won its second consecutive boys team title at the Pinch-A-Penny FHSAA State 2A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

The undefeated Patriots finished their perfect season with an 81-point margin of victory over runner-up Tampa Jesuit. American Heritage finished with 265 points. Tampa Jesuit had 184.

“I couldn’t be happier with how the kids performed, they did a very good job,” American Heritage coach Nobutaka Tan. “They put a lot of pressure on themselves. They had such high expectations and knew what needed to be done. I am very proud of them.

“The first time winning you always remember, but the second time is more satisfying. Everyone knew who we were this time around. I told every one of our kids they had a bull’s eye on their chest, that we weren’t the underdog anymore.”

The Patriots didn’t waste any time piling up the relay points by winning all three to total 120 points.

“That was the task the boys were given, we talked about winning all three relays coming in here,” Tan said. “Our kids were pretty pumped on the relays.”

American Heritage took the lead after the opening relay and never relinquished it.

“I did know we were leading but I also reminded the kids that every swim and every relay counts, it kept them on their toes,” Tan said. “They knew we had enough of a gap after the 200 free relay but I told them not to worry about the points and do one swim at a time.”

American Heritage defended its title in the 200-yard medley relay winning in a season-best 1:36.90 with Nico Medina, Jonathan Farah, Fernando Bohorquez and Taylor Eaddy. Medina, Bohorquez and Eaddy were repeat relay state champions.

American Heritage, third last year in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.24, won the event in 1:27.21 with Eaddy, Chris Garcia, Bohorquez and Julien Pinon, who swam a 21.30 anchor leg split. Eaddy, Garcia and Pinon were members of last year’s relay.

The Patriots, second in last year’s 400-yard freestyle relay, won in 3:09.17 with Eaddy, Garcia, Medina and Pinon. Pinon, Medina and Garcia were on last year’s relay.

Pinon, a junior and South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer, was the only American Heritage swimmer to finish among the top three in individual events.

Seeded fourth after prelims, Pinon was third in the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:38.66, the fastest time in the county this year. His previous best was 1:41.92. He was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.01, another best time.

“Julien did a hell of a job this meet,” Tan said. “He has been like this all season long. He was on top for us this season. He did a really nice job for us.”

Pinion’s SOFLO teammate CJ Kopecki, a freshman, had an outstanding state meet for American Heritage. Kopecki won the “B” final in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:44.07 and finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.26 after going a best time 4:42.17 in prelims.

“CJ came out and did an excellent job as a freshman,” Tan said. “Making the finals in the 500 free, he did a phenomenal job.”

SOFLO teammate Esteban Diaz-Velasco of Somerset was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 54.26.

SOFLO’s Ervin Marin of Mater Lakes, making his state meet debut as a freshman, won the “B” final in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.47 and went a best time 1:00.41 in prelims. He was also 11th in the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 1:58.38. SOFLO teammate Ricardo Roche of Somerset also turned in a best time along with Kevin Porto of Mater Lakes, making his state meet debut, swam a best time.

“Our kids all swam best times at a very competitive meet,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said.

The girls’ competition came down to a two-way fight between Gulliver Prep and Suncoast, the classic private vs. public school matchup.

Gulliver Prep, fourth last year, relied on its depth to win with 240 points. Suncoast, buoyed by two relay victories, finished runner-up with 185 after finishing fifth last year.

Defending champion Pensacola Washington was third with 172.

Gulliver Prep was led by individual state champion Kelly Fertel in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.54). It was a season-best for the top morning seed, dropping from her seed time of 2:04.36.

Fertel was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.57. Niki Urquidi was third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 500 freestyle. Namilla Sanchez and Brooke Ellis also finished in the Top 8.

Gulliver Prep picked up 42 points from its three distance swimmers in the 500 freestyle. Urquidi, Sanchez and Alicia Mancilla finished 4-5-6.

With Gulliver leading Suncoast, 200-183, going into the final event, Urquidi, Sanchez, Mancilla and Fertel left no doubt by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:32.58.

Suncoast won the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay titles. The Chargers out-touched Pensacola Washington to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.25-1:46.93 with Fabiana Ingram, Francesca Vandersluis, Ashley Boggs and Jena Pisani. The same foursome won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:36.21.

St. Brendan senior Zuhayr Pigot won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.42 and Fisher Crist of Cardinal Gibbons was third in 21.14. Pigot was also second in the 100 butterfly in 49.70.

Tori Bindi of Gulf Breeze, Sophie Cattermole of Lemon Bay, Sherridon Dressel of Clay and Steffen Mount of Pensacola Washington were double winners.

Bindi, a junior swept the 50 (23.49) and 100-yard freestyles (50.89).

Cattermole, a senior, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.39 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.22.

Dressel, younger sister of record holder Caleb Dressel, won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.56 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.63. It was her second state title in the backstroke.
