SOFLO’s Marinheiro, Rodriguez Win Three Region Titles; Cypress Bay Sweeps Team Titles

November 1, 2014—-Jessica Rodriguez of Hialeah Gardens and Melissa Marinheiro of West Broward won three region titles Saturday at the Region 4-4A Swimming and Diving Championships at Ransom Everglades.

It was the first of two region meets Ransom Everglades hosted on Saturday. The Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships, featuring Belen Jesuit and Martin County, were also hosted by the school at its state-of-the-art facility.

Rodriguez, enjoying her best high school season, was a double winner and scored most of her team’s points. She won the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best 2:09.03, dropping 4.75 off her previous best.

Rodriguez, a sophomore, also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.69, another season-best dropping 1.89 seconds.

Marinheiro, a senior, won the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 5:07.89, shaving 4.76 seconds off her previous best. She was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.02, also a season-best, dropping 2.91 seconds.

Both South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers will be returning to the Pinch-A-Penny State 4A Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

Other SOFLO swimmers among the top four finishers: Star Fassler of Cooper City in the 200 IM in 2:17.56; Jonathan Strod of Cypress Bay in the 200 IM in 2:04.14; and Gustavo Valery of Flanagan in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.03.

Cypress Bay swept the boys and girls team titles.

Cypress Bay girls, led by diving champion Maya Fernandes and winning 400-yard freestyle relay, won the girls crown with 372 points, more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Coral Gables with 234.

Fernandes won with 317.50 points and the girls relay of Andrea van den Berg, Haley Wright, Kylie Herman and Emiliana Pelaez.

Cypress Bay boys, led by double winner Mark Burnley and winning 400-yard freestyle relay, won with 353 points. Hialeah Gardens was second with 229 points.

Burnley won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.34 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.11, both season-best times. Burnley also anchored the winning relay (3:17.45) winning with teammates Fernando Navarrete, Carlos Neira and Jorge Depassier.

SOFLO’s Marin Wins District Title; Gulliver Prep Sweeps Team Titles

November 1, 2014—Ervin Marin of Mater Lakes Academy won his first district title Friday at the District 12-2A Swimming and Diving Championships at Gulliver Prep’s Marian Krutulis Aquatics Center.

The South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer won the 100-yard breaststoke in a season-best 1:00.64, dropping 0.36 seconds. Marin was also fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.

At last year’s District 12-3A for Goleman, Marin was third in the breaststroke in 1:04.75.

Several SOFLO swimmers finished among the top three in one of the tougher district meets in the state.

Esteban Diaz-Velasco of Somerset was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.84 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.73.

Kevin Porto of Mater Lakes was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.61 and was also third in the 100-yard backstroke in 57.87.

SOFLO’s top girls finisher was Isabel Shashaty of Archbishop McCarthy, fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.51.

Other SOFLO swimmers among the Top 10 were: Abby Oyetunji of Somerset, Alani Carrasco of Somerset, Andres Arias of Archbishop McCarthy, Ricardo Roche of Somerset, Eduardo Graziano of Somerset, Chris Sanchez of Archbishop McCarthy, Federico Molina of Somerset, Wyatt Jennessee of Archbishop McCarthy and Sebastian Sierra of Mater Lakes.

Swim powerhouse Gulliver Prep swept the team titles in its own home pool. The girls team won with 535 points and boys team won with 427. Doral was runner-up in both the girls with 515 and boys with 414.

Niki Urquidi and Kelly Fertel were double winners for Gulliver Prep.

Urquidi won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.71 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.84. Fertel won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.75 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.93.

Gulliver Prep swept all three girls relays.

Alex Arrieta of Doral, Alberto Gomez of Doral and Zuhayr Pigot of St. Brendan were double winners in the boys competition.

Arrieta won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.76 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.93.

Gomez won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.69 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.73.

Gulliver Prep won two boys relays.

Pigot won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.56 and 100-yard butterfly in 49.61.

SOFLO’s Pinon, Kopecki Lead American Heritage At District 11-2A Meet

October 31, 2014—Defending state boys champion American Heritage took its first step to returning to the state meet by winning the District 11-2A Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce.

American Heritage won the combined team title with 860 points and boys team title with 534 points, nearly 200 points ahead of runner-up Suncoast.

Suncoast won the girls team title with 450 points. Lincoln Park was second with 336.

American Heritage swept all three boys relays.

SOFLO’s Julien Pinon was the only boys double winner for American Heritage. Pinon won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.18 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.58. He also swam anchor leg on the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

American Heritage and SOFLO teammate CJ Kopecki was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:49.60 and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.29.

Individual winners for American Heritage were Fernando Bohorquez in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.02; Taylor Eaddy in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.71 and Nico Medina in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.

Suncoast girls won the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay and had three individual winners. Jena Pisani won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.58, Fabiana Ingram in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.07 and Francesca Vandersluis in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.84.

Catharine Cooper of American Heritage was the only girls double winner. Cooper won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.22 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.38. Cooper also led off the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.
