November 1, 2014—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers had an outstanding day at the Region 4-3A Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at Ransom Everglades.

“The kids did an outstanding job,” said Pembroke Pines Charter coach Rose Lockie.

Pembroke Pines Charter freshman Kelley Heron won two individual titles in the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best 2:11.75, dropping 1.98 seconds.

The SOFLO swimmer also won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.18.

Teammate Lilli Calero, a junior, won the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 5:17.35, shaving off a impressive 19.75 seconds off her previous best. She was seeded fourth in 5:37.10. Calero was also fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.46.

Heron and Calero were also members of Pembroke Pines Charter’s runner-up 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

The pair played a big role in Pembroke Pines Charter finishing runner-up among the 18-team field with 281 points, just 36 points out of first place.

Pembroke Pines Charter junior Ryan Capote, also of SOFLO, won the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:45.47, dropping 3.66 seconds. He was also third in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.49, another season-best dropping 0.81.

Other SOFLO swimmers among the top four finishers were: Jordan Colon of Mater Academy, third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.62 and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.12; Juan Lucas of Pembroke Pines Charter, third in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.56 and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.41; Vanessa Mesa of Mater, fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.31; Liz Travieso of Mater, second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.37; and Delanie Perez of Goleman, third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.41.

Stuart Martin County, led by double winner Hannah Burdge, individual champion Sara Lacusky and winning 200-yard medley relay, won the girls title with 317 points.

Burdge, a senior, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.24 and 100-yard freestyle in 53.00. Burdge also led off the winning 200-yard medley relay that won in 1:56.20 with teammates Sara Lacusky, Erin Proctor, Antonella Ambrosini).

Lacusky, also a senior, won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best 1:07.19.

Pembroke Pines Charter girls team was second with 281 points ahead of rival Fort Lauderdale with 265.

In the boys competition, Miami Belen Jesuit defended its title with 341 points. Pembroke Pines Charter was second ahead of Jensen Beach and Fort Lauderdale with 247 points.

Belen won the boys 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. Alejandro Carriazo was a double winner for Belen. He won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.60 and 100-yard backstroke in 53.66. Teammate Mario Basalo won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.28.

Fort Lauderdale’s boys team had a roller coaster meet. Raphael Marcoux was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle on 20.92 and 100-yard freestyle in 46.09. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:28.70.

The Flying L’s were dealt a severe blow losing its boys 400-yard freestyle to a disqualification for an early start. Fort Lauderdale had won the relay in 3:13 and would have finished second among the team standings. The Flying L’s also had one of its top girls swimmers disqualified in the 50 freestyle also costing them second place.

The top qualifiers advance into the Pinch-A-Penny State 3A Meet next Saturday in Stuart.
