November 8, 2014—Pine Crest girls and University School boys held off St. Andrew’s to win the Region 4-1A Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at Nova Southeastern Aquatics Center.

Buoyed by three individual titles and two relay winners, Pine Crest won the girls team title with 417 points for a 50-point cushion over St. Andrew’s with 367 points.

Sophomore sprinter Marta Ciesla was an individual double winner, capturing the 50-yard freestyle in 23.45 and 100-yard freestyle in 50.95, finishing ahead of Caroline Nava of Westminster Academy in both races.

Lindsey Swartz won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.69.

Pine Crest won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:44.67 with Miriyam Ghali, Lindsey Swartz, Tyla Martin and Ciesla and 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:37.66 with Ciesla, Brooke Bernstein, Tyla Martin and Swartz.

Westminster Academy’s Jessica Nava knocked off Megan Moroney of St. Andrew’s to win the 100-yard butterfly in 54.68.

Westminster Academy’s other individual champion was diver Johanna Holloway with 492.50. Three-time state champion Carolyn Chaney of Pine Crest was third with 456.80.

University School boys team, with two relay wins and two individual champions, upset St. Andrew’s by 14 points, 286-274, to win the region crowd.

In one of many exciting races of the night, the 200-yard medley relay team of Patrick Groters, Daniel Pereira, John Silvera and Matthew Lyn) edged St. Andrew’s, 1:38.71-1:39.00.

University School pulled off another close win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Groters, Maxamillian Asnis, Silvera and Lyn in 1:30.28, out-touching St. Andrew’s in 1:30.36.

Groters won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.31 and Pereira won the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.03 just ahead of Hank Contich of Calvary Christian in 59.55.

Mateo Gonzalez of Sagemont and Anton Voronin of North Broward Prep were doubles winners.

Gonzalez won the 200-yard individual winner in 1:53.49 and 100-yard butterfly in 49.93.

Voronin won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.56 and 100-yard freestyle in 46.66.

Austin Fields of Pine Crest won the boys 1-meter diving with 497.65 points.

Top finishers will now advance next Saturday into the Lion’s Den, otherwise known as the State 1A Swimming and Diving Championships featuring defending boys and girls champion Jacksonville Bolles, a perennial powerhouse.
