March 7, 2015—On another rainy, windy night at Coral Springs Aquatic Complex, South Florida Aquatic Club was among twelve record-breakers Saturday night at the Florida Gold Coast 14&Under Short Course Junior Olympics.

South Florida Aquatic Club’s “A” 11&12 200-yard medley relay broke the FGC record and FGC Open record in 1:55.81 with Isabella Di Salvo, 12, Molly Golding, 11, Vanessa Mesa, 12, and Jacqueline Lugo, 12, at the Michael Lohberg Pool of Champions.

The splits were 30.17, 33.83, 27.04 and 24.77.

SOFLO’s “B” relay was second in 1:59.23 with Kayla Cunningham, Katrina Del Vecchio, Kyana Castro and Valentina Carrion.

“Eight girls broke that record,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said. “We could have switched some of the girls and they still would have broken the record. I’ve stressed it before that we are cultivating the proper culture in these training groups. It doesn’t take three or four girls or boys, it takes eight or nine.”

The same record-breaking girls also won the 400-yard medley relay in 4:17.02 and same B relay was second in 4:23.44.

After two days, South Florida Aquatic Club leads the combined team standings with 790 points followed by Metro Aquatics with 426 and Pine Crest Swimming with 417 points.

SOFLO also leads the women standings with 451 points followed by Pine Crest with 346 and AquaKids Sharks with 227.

Metro Aquatics is the top men’s team with 388 points. SOFLO is second with 339 and Azura Florida Aquatics has 232 points.

SOFLO is sitting pretty to repeat as champions headed into the third and final day of competition. The team is younger than last year’s JO champion.

“As young as they are these kids are doing phenomenal and the coaching staff is doing great,” Anderson said. “To watch the 11-12 girls break the record and have the B team right there in second is phenomenal.

“This year’s team is younger than last year but they are getting it done,” Anderson said. “We had some great, wonderful swims tonight. We are going to be hard to beat.

“The girls relay was definitely the swim of the night for us,” Anderson said.

Among SOFLO’s other top performers were:

Vanessa Mesa, 12, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.28 and was second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:51.80.

Erika Pelaez, 8, was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:15.17 and second in the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:10.07.

Isabella Di Salvo was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.24.
