July 31, 2015—Kathleen Golding of South Florida Aquatic Club won her first major title at a national meet Friday at the inaugural USA Swimming Futures Championships.

Golding, 14, won the 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 4:55.80, bettering her previous best of 4:57.67, a 1.87-second drop and coming within tenths of the Olympic Trials cut.

Golding, the only individual champion from the state of Florida, enabled SOFLO women’s team to remain in third place with 88 points after two days.

Also during second day action at Purdue’s Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind., SOFLO teammate and Florida State senior Marc Rojas, 21, was third in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:04.86. His previous best was 1:06.56.

The Futures Championships are a trio of meets in Greensboro, N.C., Mt. Hood, Ore. and West Lafayette, Ind.

The meets are designed to bridge the gap between Sectionals and Junior Nationals enabling swimmers not qualified for Junior Nationals to compete in their own meet.

The meet continues today with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The results are posted on Meet Mobile under FUTURES West Lafayette 2015.
