SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding, CJ Kopecki Named All-County First Team

December 26, 2015—Kathleen Golding and CJ Kopecki of South Florida Aquatic Club earned All-County first team high school swimming honors.

Golding, a freshman at Cooper City High School, earned first team honors in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly.

Golding won a state 4A title in the 200 IM (2:00.40) and was third in the 100 butterfly (55.18).

Golding was the only SOFLO girls’ swimmer to be named to the first team.

Kopecki, a sophomore for boys’ state champion American Heritage Plantation, earned first team honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.64) and 500-yard freestyle (4:35.71).

Kopecki was third in the Class 2A meet in the 500-yard freestyle and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle. He was also a member of the state champion 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Kopecki, who moved up from last year’s honorable mention honors, was the only SOFLO boys’ swimmer on first team.

Kelley Heron, a sophomore at Pembroke Pines Charter, was selected for second team honors for the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.37).

SOFLO’s Emiliana Pelaez and Carly Swanson of Cypress Bay and Elise Larin of Somerset were named honorable mention as individual swimmers.

American Heritage freshman Annita Huang was selected as a member of the 200-and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

Jonathan Farah of American Heritage was selected for honorable mention as both an individual and relay swimmer.

Flanagan’s Gustavo Valery, Ryan Capote and Bruno Berti of Pembroke Pines Charter, Esteban Diaz-Velasco and Ricardo Roche of Somerset, Max Asnis of University School and Brendan Cassie of West Broward were also named honorable mention.

It is the most swimmers SOFLO had selected for All-County honors in team history.

The All-County swimming and diving team was announced by the Sun-Sentinel in a special section on Wednesday, Dec. 23. It can also be found online at the newspaper’s website. The Miami Herald’s team is expected to be released in two weeks.

SOFLO’s Ervin Marin Wins Three Events In Session Two Of December Sprint Championships

December 12, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Ervin Marin won two individual events and one relay during Session Two of the December Sprint Championships Saturday at Academic Village Pool.

During SOFLO’s final meet of the year, Marin, 16, won the 50-yard butterfly in 24.80 and 50-yard breaststroke in 29.92.

Marin also led off SOFLO’s winning “B” mixed freestyle relay of Abby Oyetunji, Delanie Perez and Matthew Menocal that won in 1:44.55.

Marin was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in a best time 59.50.

Sebastian Lares, 11, was a double winner for SOFLO. Lares won the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:05.51 and 50-yard breaststroke in 36.72.

SOFLO boys swept every event in the 11-12 and 13-and-over age categories. Other individual winners were Ricardo Roche, Marcos Vazquez, Michael Arias and Ryan Capote.

Sara Quintero, after a successful opening session, won another event, the 100-yard backstroke in 1:13.57. Quintero also was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:02.60.

Paige Lane, Isabella Jurado and Paige Lane were SOFLO’s individual winners.

SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding Swims Back-To-Back Best Times, Makes “C” Final At Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships

December 12, 2015—Kathleen Golding of South Florida Aquatic Club lowered her personal best twice in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday at the Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.

Golding, 15, broke 51 seconds for the first time in morning prelims in 50.48, bettering her previous best time of 51.22.

Golding came back in the “C” final to lower it again in 50.25 to finish third in the “C” final and 19th overall.

Golding has turned in three best times during her third junior national meet appearance. After a slow start earlier in the week, she warmed up quickly. On Friday, she lowered her 200-yard freestyle time in 1:49.64.

Golding will swim Sunday’s time trials. Golding will swim the 400-meter individual medley (4:55.80), trying to get her second U.S. Olympic cut, in Session One and 200-meter breaststroke (2:47.70) in Session Two.

SOFLO teammate Jessica Rodriguez, 16, will also swim time trials on Sunday in the 100-meter butterfly (1:09.52) and 200-meter individual medley (2:29.15).

Marta Ciesla, 17, of Pine Crest Swimming was among Florida Gold Coast’s top finishers. After winning her second junior national title in the 50, she came back and finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in a best time 48.97. She was seeded second going into finals.

Raiz Tjon-A-Joe, 18, of Azura Florida Aquatics was second in the 100-yard freestyle in a best time 44.03, dropping from 45.05. He was seeded sixth going into finals.

In other events:

Madison Homovich, 15, of Raleigh Marlins led from start to finish to win the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:09.63, nearly a nine-second margin of victory.

Taylor Delk, 18, of SwimAtlanta won the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:16.42.

Kaitlin Harty, 18, swimming unattached won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.27.

Michael Taylor, 16, of Dynamo won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:41.94.

Isabel Ivey, 15, of Gator Swim Club won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.44.

Michael Jensen, 17, of Upper Dublin won the 100-yard freestyle in 43.64.

Allie Raab, 15, of Nashville Aquatics broke the meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke to win in 2:09.69. The previous record was 2:10.03 set in 2010 by Mary Olsen of Sun Devil Aquatics.

Charles Vaughan, 17, of Carmel won the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:58.25.

Grace Oglesby, 17, of Cardinal Aquatics won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.39.

Camden Murphy, 16, of Kingfish won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:44.31.

SOFLO’s Quintero, Lares Double Winners In Session One Of December Sprint Championships

December 12, 2015—Sara Quintero and Sebastian Lares of South Florida Aquatic Club each won two events in the opening session of the December Sprint Championships Saturday at Academic Village Pool in Pembroke Pines.

Quintero, 12, won the 100-yard butterfly in a best time 1:09.57, dropping .03 off her previous best.

Quintero also won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:12.17, also a best time, shaving 1.03 seconds off her previous best.

Other individual SOFLO girls winners were Jena Legaspi, Sarah Acevedo, Abby Oyetunji and Kelley Heron.

Lares, 11, won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.42 and 100-yard individual medle in 1:06.71.

Other individual SOFLO boys winners were Marcos Vazquez, Kevin Porto, Michael Arias, Ryan Capote, Ervin Marin and Sam Asnis.

Teams entered in the two-session meet were Bob Karl Swim Club, Bone Island Swim Club, Devilrays Swim Club, Indian River Aquatics, Metro Aquatics, YSF of South Florida and host SOFLO.

It was the final Florida Gold Coast meet of the year for SOFLO.

SOFLO Girls Dominate Holiday Classic

December 11, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club’s girl power dominated the 10&Under Holiday Classic Friday night at Academic Village in Pembroke Pines.

Fiorella Di Salvo won four 7-8 events and finished second and posted four best times in another to lead the girls team.

Valerie Vank won five events in the 9-10 age group.

Six-year-old Clara Bland won all four of her events.

SOFLO girls compiled 404 points to win the team title. The boys team swept the team title with 297 points.

The boys were led by Joseph Blake Natino, who won all four of his events; Alejandro Mateus, who won five events; and double winner Benjamin Kim.

On Saturday, the December Sprint Championship will be held with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Teams entered are Bob Karl Swim Club, Bone Island Swim Club, Delvilrays Swim Club, Indian River Aquatics, Metro Aquatics, YSF of South Florida and host SOFLO.

SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding Swims Best Time At Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships

December 11, 2015—Kathleen Golding, despite swimming back-to-back events, lowered her time in the 200-yard freestyle on Day Three of the Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships Friday at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.

Competing in her third junior nationals, the 15-year-old South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer was 30th in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:49.64, the first time she cracked 1:50. Her previous best was 1:51.58. Her splits were 25.54, 27.81, 28.52, 27.77.

“That was really a nice swim for her, we are happy about that,” SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson said.

Golding swam her best time just moments after she was 44th in the 100-yard butterfly prelims in 56.01, just off her seed time of 55.18.

Golding will swim the 100-yard freestyle (51.22) on Saturday.

Golding will also swim in Sunday’s time trials. Golding will swim the 400-meter individual medley (4:55.80) in Session One and 200-meter breaststroke (2:47.70) in Session Two.

SOFLO teammate Jessica Rodriguez, 16, competing in her second junior nationals, was 77th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.91. Rodriguez has scratched from Saturday’s 200-meter breaststroke. She will also swim time trials on Sunday in the 100-meter butterfly (1:09.52) and 200-meter individual medley (2:29.15).

The top Florida Gold Coast finisher was Pine Crest Swimming’s Jessica Nava, fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.46.

In other events:

Brooke Forde, 16, of Lakeside won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:07.49, nearly three seconds ahead of Savanna Faulcon, 17, of Spartaquatics.

Charlie Swanson, 17 of Nova of Virginia won the 400-yard individual medley in 3:47.65.

Grace Oglesby, 17, of Cardinal Aquatics broke the meet record in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.41. The previous record was 52.44.

Camden Murphy, 16, of Kingfish Aquatics won the 100-yard butterfly in a meet record in 46.25.

Hannah Cox, 17, of Upper Valley Aquatics won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.67.

Michael Jensen, 17, of Upper Dublin Aquatics won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:34.93.

Allie Raab, 15, of Nashville Aquatics won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.02.

Will Chan, 15, of SwimMAC won the 100-yard breaststroke in 53.99.

Alex Walsh, 14, of Nashville Aquatics won the 100-yard backstroke in a meet record 51.62. Kaitlin Harty, 18, swimming unattached also swam below the old record in 51.67.

Ethan Young, 17, of Carpet Capital won the 100-yard backstroke in a meet record 46.66, breaking Ryan Murphy’s 2011 record of 46.72.

Saturday’s events are the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle and 4x100yard freestyle relay.

Prelims are 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. The meet is being live streamed at usaswimming.org.

The Speedo West Winter Junior National Championships are being held simultaneously this week at the University of Texas’ Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

ELSEWHERE

Team USA, led by American records from Simone Manuel, Cody Miller and Tom Shields and world record by the women’s 400 medley relay, Team USA took a stunning 74-48 advantage over Team Europe Friday night at the seventh Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The U.S. has all but locked up its seventh victory over Team Europe in meet history.

The U.S. foursome of Courtney Bartholomew, Katie Meili, Kelsi Worrell and Simone Manuel broke the world record in the 400 medley relay in 3:45.20, breaking the 2011 record of 3:45.56.

Manuel won the 100 freestyle in an American record 51.69 breaking Natalie Coughlin’s 51.88 mark. Miller took down the American record in the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.33. Shields won the 100 butterfly in an American record 48.63.

St. Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis knocked off Russian Yulia Efimova in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:18.35 to 2:18.55.

Ryan Lochte of Daytona Beach won the 400 individual medley in 4:02.78 ahead of Dan Wallace (4:04.10). The duel continues on Saturday afternoon.

SOFLO Hosts Final Two Florida Gold Coast Meets Of The Year

On Friday, the 10&Under Holiday Classic begins at 5 p.m.

SOFLO’s Golding, Rodriguez Swim First Events; Ciesla Top FGC Finisher On Day Two Of Speedo East Winter Junior Nationals

December 10, 2015—Kathleen Golding and Jessica Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club competed in their first event on Day Two of the Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships Thursday at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.

Golding, 15, and Rodriguez, 16, both competed in the 200-yard individual medley.

Golding finished in 2:05.02 and Rodriguez turned in a 2:11.21.

Pine Crest Swimming’s Marta Ciesla, 17, was the Florida Gold Coast’s top finisher winning the 50-yard freestyle, her signature event, in a best time 22.52. Her seed time was 22.56.

In other events:

Hannah Cox, 17, of Upper Valley Aquatics won the 500-yard freestyle in a meet record 4:37.82. The previous record was 4:38.89 set in 2008 by Amber McDermott of Salmon Bay.

Walker Higgins, 15, of Tennessee Aquatics won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:18.40. Santi Corredor, 16, of Swim Florida was seventh in 4:25.18.

Alex Walsh, 14, of Nashville Aquatics won the girls 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.20.

Jacob Montague, 17, of Grosse Pointe, Ga. won the boys 200-yard individual medley in 1:46.72.

Michael Jensen, 17, of Upper Dublin won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.85, the only swimmer to break 20 seconds. Brody Heck of St. Andrew’s was third in 20.19 and Raiz Tjon-A-Joe of Azura Florida Aquatics was fourth in 20.36. Cody Cline of Wahoos of Wellington won the B final in 20.35.

SwimMAC broke the meet record in the girls’ 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:11.88 with Erika Brown, Alyssa Marsh, Christina Lappin and Jessica Merritt. SwimMAC also won the girls’ 200-yard medley relay.

Bolles won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:28.64 with Andy Song An, James Daugherty, Ariel Spektor and Tyler Rice. Upper Dublin won the 800 free relay in 6:33.56.

For the remainder of the meet, Golding will also swim the 100-yard butterfly (55.18), 200-yard freestyle (1:51.58) and 100-yard freestyle (51.22).

Rodriguez will swim the 100-meter breaststroke (1:03.63), in which she is seeded 34th, and 200-meter breaststroke (2:17.38).

Friday’s events are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

SOFLO’s Golding, Rodriguez Ready For Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships

December 8, 2015—South Florida Aquatic Club’s dynamic duo is ready to take on the some of the nation’s best swimmers at the Speedo East Winter Junior National Championships at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.

Kathleen Golding, 15, and Jessica Rodriguez, 16, will represent SOFLO in the elite meet.

The four-day meet begins Wednesday with the 200-medley and 800 freestyle relays and ends on Saturday. Bonus long course meter time trials are Sunday.

Golding and Rodriguez begin competing on Thursday in the 200-yard individual medley. Golding is seeded seventh in her signature event in 2:00.40. Rodriguez is seeded 112th in 2:08.07. Tatum Wade, 17, of Nashville Aquatics is top seed in 1:57.53.

Golding, the TYR August Swimmer of the Month, got her first U.S. Olympic trials cut at age 14 in the 200-meter individual medley IM in 2:18.67 during the USA Swimming Futures Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.

Golding, a high school state champion as a freshman, will also swim the 100-yard butterfly (55.18), 200-yard freestyle (1:51.58) and 100-yard freestyle (51.22).

In the 200 IM, Rodriguez will swim the 100-meter breaststroke (1:03.63), in which she is seeded 34th, and 200-meter breaststroke (2:17.38).

The pair will also swim in Sunday’s time trials. Golding will swim the 400-meter individual medley in Session One and 200-meter breaststroke in Session two.

Rodriguez will swim the 100-meter butterfly in Session One and 200-meter breaststroke in Session Two.

The Florida Gold Coast will be well-represented. Among the higher seeds are Marta Ciesla of Pine Crest Swimming, Raiz Tjon-A-Joe and Marco Guarente of Azura Florida Aquatics, Cody Cline of Wahoos of Wellington and Brody Heck of St. Andrew’s Swimming.

Bolles, SwimMAC, Swim Atlanta and Spartaquatics and Gator Swim Club are among top teams.

SOFLO Wraps Up AT&T Winter National Championships; Swimmers Resume Training For Trials, Rio Olympics

December 6, 2015—The most decorated Olympian ever said it best at the conclusion of the AT&T Winter National Championships late Saturday night at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

“It seems like a long time before Olympic trials, but it will be here before you know it,” said Michael Phelps, who took home his third national title in the 200-meter butterfly on the final night of competition.

Phelps won the event in 1:56.11 ahead of North Baltimore Aquatic Club training partner Chase Kalisz in 1:57.19. Phelps also won the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley.

Phelps now has 62 national titles in his career.

Phelps and Missy Franklin earned the national high point awards. Phelps finished with 60 points and Franklin totaled 72 points.

Two of SOFLO’s three pros at the meet competed on the final day of competition.

Two-time Colombian Olympian Carolina Colorado was 23rd in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:16.15.

Kile Aukerman was 41st in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:22.57.

In other championship finals:

Five-time Olympic medalist Missy Franklin won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:07.87, her second national title of the meet.

Simone Manuel won the 100-meter freestyle in 53.98.

Reigning Olympic silver medalist Haley Anderson of Trojan Swim Club won the 800-meter freestyle in 8:29.32 and 200-meter butterfly.

Lily King won the 200-meter breaststroke and broke the 15-year-old 17-18 national age group record in 2:24.47. The previous record was held by Amanda Beard.

Michael McBroom won the 1500-meter freestyle in 15:10.31, an eight-second margin of victory.

Matt Grevers won the 200-meter backstroke in 1:57.24, holding off Patrick Mulcare in 1:57.34.

Bolles alum and Canadian Santo Condorelli knocked off Nathan Adrian in the 100-meter freestyle in 48.05. Adrian finished third in 48.60.

The meet was a FINA-approved competition where swimmers could achieve qualifying times for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
