August 5, 2016—Kathleen Golding of the South Florida Aquatic Club came up big Friday night in her first individual events of the USA Swimming Futures Championships at Georgia Tech’s McCauley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

The U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier won the 200-meter freestyle in a career-best time of 2:01.99. Her previous best was 2:07.97. She shaved nearly six seconds off her previous best time.

Golding, 15, who will be a sophomore at Cooper City High School this fall, was seeded seventh after morning prelims bettering her previous best in 2:05.06 and then lowering it even more in the final.

Golding was also third in the 100-meter butterfly in another best time 1:01.74, a drop of 1.54 seconds. She was seeded eighth after prelims in 1:02.69. Her previous best was 1:03.28.

Golding also anchored the tenth place 400-meter freestyle relay. Golding has the 50-, 100-, and 400-meter freestyles remaining.

SOFLO girls team is sixth with 75 points, with Golding scoring 36 of them.

Several SOFLO teammates turned in best times against a fast field.

Kelley Heron swam a best time 1:16.71 in the 100-meter breaststroke. Max Asnis had a best time 1:58.97 in the 200-meter freestyle and Ryan Capote also had a best time in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.79. Luke Lezotte swam a best time 1:01.94 in the 100-meter butterfly. Rafael Rodriguez posted a best time 4:44.67 in the 400-meter individual medley.

The meet concludes on Sunday.

SOUTHERN ZONES

Joshua Zuchowski of FAST led Florida Gold Coast with another win in the backstroke Friday at the Southern Zone Age Group Championships at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, N.C.

Zuchowski won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:04.30 and was also a member of the third place 200-meter medley relay.

Paige Lane was SOFLO’s top finisher as a member of the seventh place 200-meter medley relay.

The zone championships feature top regional swimmers at the senior and age group levels who qualify for these meets within the four designated zones (Eastern, Central, Southern and Western). The meet ends on Saturday night.

U.S. OPEN

Andrew Wilson of Bethesda, Md. and Zane Grothe of Boulder City, Nev. won their second gold medals on Day Four of the U.S. Open at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

Wilson swept the breaststroke events, winning 100 race in 59.51. Grothe won the men’s 200-meter freestyle in 1:47.61. Grothe broke the U.S. Open meet record in the men’s 400 freestyle earlier this week.

Fourteen-year-old Regan Smith of Lakeville, Minn. finished second in the women’s 100 backstroke. Smith broke the 13-14 national age group record in 1:00.26, previously held by Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin.

The U.S. Open concludes on Saturday.
