SOFLO Distance, IMR-IMX Challenge Open Begins Friday

By Sharon Robb

September 29, 2016—South Florida Aquatic Club will host one of the fall’s largest Florida Gold Coast meets this weekend.

Nearly 500 swimmers and sixteen teams will compete Friday through Sunday in the SOFLO Distance, IMR-IMX Challenge Open Invite at Academic Village Pool.

Several high school swimmers including Cooper City High sophomore Kathleen Golding of SOFLO, a U.S. Trials qualifier, will compete. Golding, 15, is top seed in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 200 IM and 400 IM.

Golding is one of 128 swimmers entered in the meet. Among them are Max Asnis, Kyana Castro, Fiorella Di Salvo, Zackary Harris, CJ Kopecki, Sebastian Lares, Ervin Marin, Michelle Marinheiro, Abby Oyetunji, Sara Quintero, Ricardo Roche, Jennifer Rodriguez and Marc Rojas.

SOFLO’s Kelley Heron is seeded first in the 200-yard backstroke. SOFLO has the top three seeds in the event with Kayla Cunningham and Golding. Ricardo Roche is seeded first in the 200-yard backstroke. Florida State alum Marc Rojas is top seed in the 200-yard breaststroke. Jena Legaspi is top seed in the 100-yard backstroke. Sebastian Lares is No. 1 seed in the 100-yard backstroke. Kaitlyn Barrios is top seed in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Swimmers will get the opportunity to get some much-need racing in and chance to see how they stack up against the rest of the nation’s age group swimmers.

Up-and-coming swimmers will compete in the IMR (Ready) Challenge. All sessions are timed finals.

The USA Swimming-sanctioned meet is a fun, motivational meet to help young swimmers reach the next level in their swimming careers.

The IMR Challenge allows swimmers to see how they compare to other swimmers around the nation in their age group. Swimmers must compete in all the events required for their age group to establish a score.

Once a swimmer competes in each IM Ready event at least once in an official meet, swimmers and parents can check their rankings on USA Swimming’s website.

The IMX (Xtreme) Challenge is the next step-up from the IMR competition. It includes a series of five or six events. Once swimmers complete the IMX program they can also see where their score ranks nationally, among their local LSC and own swim club.

On Friday, the distance event 1,000-yard freestyle begins 5:30 p.m. with an estimated finish time of 8:01 p.m.

On Saturday, the 10-and-under and 11-12 IMR events are 100 IM, 200 IM, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and begin at 8:30 a.m. The 13-and-over 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 400 IM begin 1 p.m.

On Sunday at 8:30 a.m., the 10-and-under and 12-and-under events are 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly. The 13-and-over events begin at noon and include the 200 butterfly, 200 IM and 500 freestyle.

TYR JULY SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Jennifer Rodriguez

By Sharon Robb

Jennifer Rodriguez needed a break from swimming.

The South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer took time off from October, 2015 to March, 2016.

Rodriguez, 16, a sophomore at Hialeah Gardens High School, stayed in shape running the two-mile distance race and 4×200-yard relay for her high school track team.

“I was a little burned out on swimming,” Rodriguez said. “I thought I should take a little break to see if I wanted to continue swimming. I needed to recharge my batteries.

“In the beginning it was nice to have the break but then I started missing it after a while and I came back. I missed my friends and coaches and training and competing at swim meets.”

Rodriguez wasted no time getting back into swim shape. She trained with the senior development group for two weeks before resuming training with Gold Group and Coach Travis Lockie.

“It didn’t take me that long to get back into shape,” Rodriguez said. “I felt a little lazy without swimming. I ran track. I didn’t stop exercising.”

That was obvious at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Long Course Championships in July in Coral Springs. She first won the 15-16 50-meter breaststroke in 35.76, just 0.16 off her best time. She also won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:46.28. She was the lone SOFLO champion, boy or girl, at the meet.

Rodriguez finished her most successful meet with a third-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke in a best time 1:16.52. She also led off SOFLO’s 800-meter freestyle relay that finished fifth in 9:21.71 with teammates Abby Oyetunji, Isabella DiSalvo and Emiliana Pelaez.

“I was happiest with senior champs,” Rodriguez said. “I was motivated. I saw I was ranked first on the psych sheet and thought oh my God, I can actually win and I won.”

Rodriguez comes from a swimming family. Her older brother, Alex, and sister, Jessica are swimmers and compete for SOFLO. Her dad was a swimmer and her mother a gymnast.

“When I was 4-years-old I watched my brother practice,” Rodriguez said. “He started swimming before me and my sister. It looked like fun.”

Rodriguez, whose idol is now-retired Olympic breaststroker Rebecca Soni, is working toward qualifying for her first state high school meet.

“I am happy with my swimming now,” she said. “The break was good. Now I am more into it and doing a lot better.”
