Heron, Roche Top SOFLO Finishers At State 3A Meet; Charter Boys Place Ninth

By Sharon Robb

November 4, 2016—Pembroke Pines Charter junior Kelley Heron finished second in the 100-yard backstroke Friday at the FHSAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving Championships at Sailfish Splash Waterpark in Stuart.

The South Florida Aquatic Club swimmer earned the top seed in morning prelims in a best time 56.33, an All-American consideration time.

Heron came back at night to finish second in 56.38, just behind Clearwater junior Helen Heuberger, fifth fastest qualifier in prelims. Last year Heron placed third in her signature event at the state meet.

“I was so happy with my morning swim because last year I remember getting third or fourth going into finals,” Heron said. “I was super excited when I saw that I got first going into finals.

“The girl that won I didn’t know she was ahead,” Heron said. “I was paying attention to the swimmers next to me. She was two lanes down. I touched the wall and thought I won. Then I saw I got second and thought ‘oh my God.’

“I definitely felt good in the water. That was my best finish at state and I went best times. Next year I am just going to have to get first.”

Heron was also fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.28, faster than her 2:05.44 prelim time and bettering her 2:09.77 seed time.

Heron scored all 32 of her girls team’s 32 points. The Jaguars finished 22nd.

In his third state meet appearance, Ricardo Roche of Pembroke Pines Charter was SOFLO’s top boys’ finisher. The junior was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.10 after going a best time 1:54.56 in prelims, lowering his previous best of 1:57.60.

Roche was also seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.55 after going a best time 4:36.70 in prelims, bettering his previous best of 4:41.67. Roche was also a member of two Top 11 relays.

“I am happy with my races,” Roche said. “I was dedicated enough to come to practices, listen to my coach about strategies and race the way I was told. It helped me a lot to perform better.

“I just got tired,” Roche said. “I was happy and excited to go best times in morning.”

Pembroke Pines Charter teammate Andres Lares was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Jaguars were seventh in the 400-yard freestyle relay (Ricardo Roche, Matthew Menocal, Rafael Rodriguez, Andres Lares) ahead of Fort Lauderdale in 3:13.41-3:13.43 and 11th in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:40.50 (Ricardo Roche, Tyler Bland, Rafael Rodriguez, Juan Lucas).

Pembroke Pines Charter boys was ninth among the 42-team field with 103 points. Tallahassee Lawton Chiles won the boys team title with 242 points followed by Belen Jesuit with 198 and defending state champion Doral Academy with 176.

St. John’s Bartram Trail won the girls team title with 176.50, just .50 points ahead of Gainesville with 176. Lawton Chiles was third with 165.5.

“We did very, very well,” said Pembroke Pines Charter and SOFLO age group coach Rose Lockie. “I think that’s the best we have done overall as a team. I am very happy with the way they swam. They had a good time and swam very well. It’s been a great season. The boys had an amazing season.

“Kelley had a great race,” Lockie said. “She thought she had won. She didn’t see the girl two lanes over. It was a good race. I am happy with the way she swam. She swam best times and had a great season.”

In other top races:

Canadian Philippe Marcoux of Fort Lauderdale High was a double winner in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. He won the 50 in 20.70 after going an automatic All-American time of 20.64 in prelims. He won the 100 in 44.61, another All-American time.

Belen Jesuit junior Aitor Fungairino won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:37.63, an All-American consideration time and 500-yard freestyle in 4:26.82, an automatic All-American time.

Julio Horrego of Mater Academy won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:50.35, an All-American consideration time.

Adrian Moya of Doral Academy won the 100-yard butterfly in 48.56, an automatic All-American time.
