SOFLO’s Atkinson Takes Bronze; Rojas Competes In Final Event Saturday At FINA Short Course World Championships

December 9, 2016—Alia Atkinson of South Florida Aquatic Club settled for a bronze medal in the 100-meter individual medley behind Katinka Hosszu and Emily Seebohm Friday at the 13th FINA Short Course World Championships at WFCU Centre in Windsor Ontario, Canada.

The Jamaican Olympian finished in 58.04. Hosszu of Hungary won in 57.14 and Seebohm of Australia in 57.97.

Atkinson, who has yet to win a gold medal, also qualified third in the 100-meter breaststroke semifinals behind Americans Lilly King and Molly Hannis in 1:04.72.

SOFLO teammate Marc Rojas, making his international debut for the Dominican Republic, will compete in his final event on Saturday in the 50-meter breaststroke.

In other events:

Men’s 200-meter freestyle relay: Russia knocked off the U.S. team led by Tom Shields to win in 1:24.32-1:24.47. Both teams were fourth and fifth at the final turn.

Women’s 50-meter butterfly: Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen won in 24.92 ahead of American Kelsi Worrell in 25.27.

Men’s 100-meter individual medley: American Michael Andrew won his first world gold medal in 51.84. Japan’s Daiya Seto was second in 52.01.

Men’s 50-meter butterfly semifinals: American Tom Shields earned the top seed in the semifinals in 22.38 ahead of South African Chad Le Clos in 22.42 and American Heritage alum Dylan Carter of Trinidad and Tobago in 22.53.

Women’s 400-meter freestyle: American Leah Smith won easily in 3:57.78. Hosszu was fourth in 3:59.89.

Men’s 50-meter freestyle: The Netherlands’ Jesse Puts won his first world gold in a shocker in the 50-meter freestyle in 21.10. Russian Vlad Morozov was second in 21.14.

Men’s 50-meter backstroke: Japan’s Junya Koga won the 50-meter backstroke in 22.85. FSU alum Pavel Sankovich of Belarus was third in 23.03.

Men’s 800-meter freestyle relay: Russia again knocked off the U.S. for another relay gold in 6:52.10-6:53.34.

Triple Winner Rodriguez Leads SOFLO On Day One Of YCF Winter Classic

December 9, 2016—Rafael Rodriguez of South Florida Aquatic Club was a triple winner on opening day of the YCF Winter Classic at the Orlando YMCA.

Rodriguez, 14, won the 13-14 200-yard freestyle in a best time 1:45.43; 100-yard butterfly in 53.25; and 400-yard individual medley in a best time 4:06.92.

Rodriguez was also a member of SOFLO’s third-place 13-14 200-yard medley relay with teammates Lance Lesage, 14, Joseph Lee, 13, and Nicolas Rossi, 13.

Alessandro Pereira, 10, won the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 27.64. He was also second in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:11.05 and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:14.28.

Santiago Rivera, 19, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.36.

SOFLO boys’ 11-12 200-yard medley relay was third in 1:58.28 with Alex Golding, 12, Mark Andre De Gracia, 12, Juan Colmenares, 12, and Enrique Rodriguez, 12.

Top individual finisher for SOFLO girls was Kerry Cunningham, 10, third in the 10-and-under 100-yard individual medley in a best time 1:15.03. She was also third in the 500-yard freestyle in a best time 6:17.49.

SOFLO’s 10-and-under 200-yard medley was second in 2:25.41 with Kerry Cunningham, 10, Mariann Catalasan, 10, Leah Pando, 10, and Kaitlyn Barrios, 10.

On Saturday and Sunday prelims begin 8:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. On Sunday, finals are 5 p.m.

The meet is an end-of-calendar year prelims and finals format meet. It was created as a replacement for the Gator meet which is not being held this year because of construction at the O’Connell Center at University of Florida.

SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding Makes Second “B” Final, Back-To-Back Bests At Junior East Nationals

December 9, 2016—Kathleen Golding of South Florida Aquatic Club made her second “B” final appearance Friday at the four-day Speedo Winter Junior National East Championships at Ohio State in Columbus.

Golding, 16, swam back-to-back best times in the 400-yard individual medley and finished second in the “B” final and tenth overall in 4:14.46.

In prelims, Golding swam 4:15.87 bettering her previous best of 4:20.07.

On Thursday, the Cooper City High School sophomore made the “B” final in the 200 IM and finished sixth in 2:00.37.

Golding was also 28th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.09, just off her best time of 1:49.46.

Golding has scored all ten of SOFLO’s team points.

The four-day meet ends on Saturday. Golding has the 100 freestyle, where she is seeded 19th in 50.25 and 200 breaststroke, seeded 61st in a long course time of 2:40.05, remaining.
