SOFLO Shines On Final Day Of SOFLO TYR Open Invite

January 29, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club rose to the occasion at the SOFLO TYR Open Invite.

And, not just the swimmers.

Despite inclement weather including rain and cold, and several scratches on the third and final day, SOFLO officials, coaching staff, booster club and volunteers contributed to a successful meet, largest in club history.

The weather didn’t dampen the spirits of anyone at at Academic Village Swimming Pool including SOFLO head coach Chris Anderson.

“It’s unreal how wonderful it was,” Anderson said. “It was first class. It was definitely one of the greatest meets despite the weather elements going on.

“The officials and staff did a wonderful job. I couldn’t be more happy. They went above and beyond.”

The swimmers closed out a successful meet on their end as well despite the cold and rain, dropping time, breaking a team record and winning events in their first home meet of the season.

Among SOFLO highlights:

Alessandro Pereira, 10, broke a team record in the 10-and-under 200-yard butterfly in 2:24.09 in his race debut.

“It’s amazing the kids are breaking records and going best times with the weather,” Anderson said.

SOFLO girls swept the 10-and-under 200-yard backstroke. Leah Pando, 10, won in 2:38.99 followed by teammates Mariann Catalasan, 10, 2:58.00 and Anastasia Lutz, 10, 3:08.86.

SOFLO boys swept the 11-12 100-yard individual medley. Sebastian Lares, 12, won in a best time 1:02.11 followed by Enrique Rodriguez, 12, in a best time 1:08.41 and Zackary Harris was third in 1:08.81.

Jennifer Rodriguez won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.37.

Leah Pando won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:38.89 and the 100-yard individual medley in 1:19.08.

Sebastian Lares won the 200-yard butterfly in a best time 2:11.01, 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.98 and 100-yard individual medley in a best time 1:02.11. Lares swam a best time 55.75 to finish second in the 100-yard freestyle.

Luke Lezotte won the 50-yard butterfly in 24.14.

In addition to host SOFLO, among other teams in the field were Boca Raton, Gulliver, Coral Springs, Plantation, SwimFast, Metro Aquatics, AquaKids Sharks, Hialeah, Miami Swimming and Blue Marlins with a record field of 900 swimmers competing over three days.

SOFLO’s Leah Pando Double Winner On Day Two Of SOFLO TYR Open Invite

January 28, 2017—Leah Pando of South Florida Aquatic Club came up big on the second day of competition at the SOFLO TYR Open Invite Saturday at Academic Village Swimming Pool in Pembroke Pines.

Pando, 10, won the 10-and-under 100-yard backstroke in 1:15.32 and 500-yard freestyle in 6:23.35. She was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 3:06.30.

Other top SOFLO performers:

Jessica Rodriguez, 18, won the 15-and-over 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.48.

Molly Golding, 13, won the 13-14 50-yard breaststroke in 32.92 and was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.35.

Jennifer Rodriguez, 16, won the 15-and-over 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 31.89 and third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.23.

Alessandro Pereira, 10, won the 10-and-under 100-yard butterfly in 1:09.22.

Lance Lesage, 14, won the 13-14 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:11.93.

Sebastian Lares, 12, won the 11-12 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.49.

Host SOFLO Shines On Opening Night Of SOFLO TYR Open Invite

January 27, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers took center stage on opening night of the SOFLO TYR Open Invite.

Competing in their home pool at the Academic Village Swimming Pool in Pembroke Pines, SOFLO swimmers dominated the Florida Gold Coast meet on Friday night.

SOFLO boys swept the top three places in the 15-and-over 100-yard individual medley. Ervin Marin, 17, won in 55.53 followed by Rafael Rodriguez, 15, in a best time 55.98 and Luke Lezotte, 15, in 57.04, also a best time.

Kathleen Golding, 16, was a double winner. The 2016 U.S. Olympic trials qualifier won the 100-yard individual medley in 57.90 and 400-yard individual medley in 4:22.03.

Leah Pando, 10, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:42.71.

Javier Colmenares, 10, won the 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:19.09.

Alessandro Pereira, 10, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.10.

Among other meet highlights:

Matthew Tarafa, 12, of Hialeah Swim Club was a double winner. He won the 11-12 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.72 and 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.33.

In addition to SOFLO, among other teams in the field are Boca Raton, Gulliver, Coral Springs, Plantation, SwimFast, Metro Aquatics, AquaKids Sharks, Hialeah, Miami Swimming and Blue Marlins. A record field of 900 swimmers is competing over three days. The meet continues Saturday with two sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

SOFLO Hosts TYR Open Invite This Weekend

January 26, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club will host its largest meet in team history this weekend.

A record field of 900 swimmers is expected to compete over three days at the TYR SOFLO Open Invite at Academic Village Swimming Pool in Pembroke Pines Friday through Sunday.

It is the largest Florida Gold Coast meet SOFLO has hosted in its home pool since the team’s inception. SOFLO has the largest team with 158 swimmers entered.

Because of the size of the meet, meet officials decided to eliminate the relay competition.

Among SOFLO’s top swimmers entered are Max Asnis, 17; Tyler Bland, 15; Kyana Castro, 14; Kathleen Golding 16; Zackary Harris, 12; Sebastian Lares, 12; Elise Larin, 15; Jie Hoon Lee, 14; Jena Legaspi, 12; Luke Lezotte, 15; Ervin Marin , 17; Yannai Michael 12; Leah Pando, 10; Rafael Rodriguez, 15; Jessica Rodriguez, 18; Nicolas Rossi, 13 and Kellie Wilcox, 16.

The global swimming brand will serve as an official sponsor of USA Swimming for technical products and performance apparel.

The sprint freestyler is a freshman….Adan Diaz of Westlake Prep School and Azura Florida Aquatics verbally committed to Nova Southeastern University…On Saturday morning, University of Florida will host its one and only home dual meet this season against Tennessee. The Gators will also honor their senior class before the meet…Pfeiffer University, latest member of Division III and USA South Conference, has reinstated its women’s swimming program. Amy Prior has been hired as head coach. The team will begin competition this fall.

Healy, Fabian Win Overall Men’s, Women’s Swim Fort Lauderdale Race; SOFLO’s Martin Finishes 13th

January 23, 2017—William Healy and Eva Fabian were overall men’s and women’s winners at the inaugural Swim Fort Lauderdale Beach this past weekend at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park.

Despite rough water conditions, Healy, 53, was first among a field of 144 swimmers in 15 minutes and 39 seconds.

Ricardo Valdivia, 52, was second in 15:45 and teenager Mattheus Santos, 15, was third overall in 15:47. Mattheus was also the top finisher among the 49-and-under swimmers.

World-class open water swimmer and national team member Eva Fabian, 23, of Yale won the women’s race in 16:09. Fabian has won gold and bronze medals at the World Aquatic Championships, gold at the Pan American Games and two silvers at Pan Pacs.

Summer Schulte, 14, was second in 16:39 and Rylie Barnhardt, 12, was third in 17:25.

Cynthia Henley won the 50-plus title in 21:52.

South Florida Aquatic Club masters swimmer Jennifer Martin, 36, was 13th among women and 55th overall in 20:05.

Martin, who will compete in this weekend’s Miami Marathon and Half Marathon, is training for the two-mile open water swim at the Aug. 7-16 World Police & Fire Games in Los Angeles. The Olympic-style competition attracts 10,000 athletes from 70 countries competing in 60 events.

Hawaii Ironman Hector Picard, 50, was 38th in 30:31. Picard of Fort Lauderdale is the first double-arm amputee to finish the Kailua-Kona event, the granddaddy of all Ironmans. He lost his right arm and most of his left arm in an electrocution accident 25 years ago.

The Swim Fort Lauderdale event featured a one-mile swim and kids’ race.

The remainder of the Swim Gym and Life Sports Fitness Swim Series is May 7th at Miami Marine Stadium and Aug. 13th in Miami Beach in front of the North Beach Bandshell.

SOFLO Swimmers Finish On Winning Note On Final Day Of GCST Winter Invitational

January 15, 2017—Yannai Michael and Alessandro Pereira of South Florida Aquatic Club finished strong against some stiff competition at the GCST Winter Invitational Sunday at Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center in Fort Myers.

Michael won the 11-12 100-yard individual medley in a best time 1:04.02. Michael also had three runner-up finishes. He was second in the 50-yard breaststroke in a best time 33.24; 50-yard freestyle in a best time 26.30 and 50-yard butterfly in a best time 29.58.

Pereira won the 10-and-under 200-yard freestyle in a best time 2:13.50. Pereira was also third in the 50-yard breaststroke in 37.05, another best time and 50-yard freestyle in a best time 28.88. He was fourth in the 50-yard butterfly in a best time 31.96.

SOFLO also took a pair of thirds in the 200-yard medley relay competition. The boys team of Nathaniel Garrick, Samuel Bullen, Yannai Michael and Lucas Porven was third in 2:12.12.

The girls relay team of Kailey Smith, Mia Escudero, Kaitlyn Barrios and Emma Twombly finished third in 2:20.35.

With only a handful of swimmers, SOFLO finished fifth among teams with 193 points in the combined and fourth in the boys competition with 150.

Gulf Coast Swim Team hosted eleven clubs and 609 swimmers, including 16 from SOFLO, for three days. The meet was SOFLO’s first road trip of the New Year.

SOFLO’s Pando, Porven, Michael & Pereira Come Up Big On Day Two Of GCST Winter Invitational

January 14, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers captured three individual titles and several top three finishes against a top-caliber field at the GCST Winter Invitational Saturday at Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center in Fort Myers.

Leah Pando won the 10-and-under 100-yard breaststroke in a best time 1:26.95.

Pando was also third in the 100-yard backstroke in a best time 1:11.67; sixth in the 100-yard individual medley in another best time 1:18.00 and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle, also in a best time 1:08.66.

Giada Porven won the 8-and-under 25-yard butterfly in 19.26.

Yannai Michael won the 11-12 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.89.

Michael was also runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley in a best time 2:17.86 and 100-yard freestyle in a best time 57.52 and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.27.

Alessandro Pereira was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:20.80, third in the 100-yard freestyle in a best time 1:03.19 and fourth in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:10.94.

Pereira Leads SOFLO On Opening Night Of GCST Winter Invitational

January 13, 2017—Alessandro Pereira of South Florida Aquatic Club was top finisher on opening night of the GCST Winter Invitational Friday at Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center in Fort Myers.

Pereira, 10, won the 200-yard individual medley in an exciting race. Pereira turned in a best time 2:28.32, just ahead of runner-up Nicholas Cavic, 10, of the Sarasota YMCA Sharks in 2:28.91.

Pereira was also runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:44.24, also a best time.

SOFLO’s top girls’ finisher was Leah Pando in the 200-yard individual medley. Pando, 10, finished fourth in 2:44.80. She was also seventh in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:24.97, a best time.

Sarah Acevedo, 13, was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in a best time 5:31.06. Emma Twombly, 12, was eighth in the distance event in 5:52.05.

Giada Porven, 8, was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:58.85 and Mia Escudero, 12, was eighth in a best time 5:21.83.

SOFLO is fourth overall with 31 points. Sarasota YMCA Sharks, with its full team, lead with 279 points. Swim Florida is second with 151. SOFLO is the only Florida Gold Coast swim team competing.

SOFLO Swimmers Hit The Road For GCST Winter Invitational

January 12, 2017—South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers are on their first road trip of the New Year.

Swimmers will compete in the three-day GCST Winter Invitational at Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center in Fort Myers.

The meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the 500 freestyle and 200 and 400 individual medleys.

Two SOFLO swimmers, Marcella and Melissa compete for the women’s swim team at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Sixteen SOFLO swimmers will compete in 114 individual events and four relays under the watchful eye of age group coach Rose Lockie.

They are: Alana Acevedo, 15; Sarah Acevedo, 13; Kaitlyn Barrios, 11; Samuel Bullen, 11; Mia Escudero, 12; Nathaniel Garrick, 12; Yannai Michael, 12; Leah Pando, 10; Alessandro Pereira, 10; Giada Porven, 8; Lucas Porven, 11; Kailey Smith, 12; Owen Smith, 10; Emma Twombly, 12; Christian Vasquez, 13; and Sarah Vasquez, 9.

The Gulf Coast Swim Team of the Florida Swimming Association is hosting the three-day age group and senior meet. The 25-yard meet will be run in two eight-lane courses each day except Sunday afternoon.
