March 24, 2017—-South Florida Aquatic Club had a successful opening day at the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships Friday at Academic Village Swimming Pool.

The defending champions got off to a great start to take the early lead in the combined team standings with 1,071 points, the only team to crack the 1,000-point barrier on opening day.

SOFLO also leads the boys team standings with 575. Pine Crest Swimming leads the girls team standings with 608 and SOFLO girls are third with 496.

“Our kids are swimming absolutely out of their minds,” SOFLO coach Chris Anderson said. “We had multiple best times, Kathleen Golding breaking a FGC record, Luke Lezotte winning the 100 IM, Jessica Rodriguez and Kelley Heron finishing one-two in the 50 breaststroke, Kelley having a heck of a swim in the 200 backstroke and five guys in finals of the open 200 butterfly. I can’t think of one best swim of the night because there were so many. I really can’t ask nything else.

“I am happy with the facility, the volunteers and officiating,” Anderson said. “It was a nice intimate evening of fast swimming.”

Two Florida Gold Coast records were broken.

SOFLO’s Kathleen Golding, 16, broke her own FGC Open record of 57.00 in the 100-yard individual medley winning in 56.58.

The 2016 U.S. Olympic trials qualifier was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.36 and second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 30.14.

Mary Smutny, 16, of AquaKids Sharks broke the FGC record of 1:58.24 by Jessica Nava and FGC Open record of 1:56.70 of Hali Flickinger in the 200-yard butterfly winning in 1:56.58. She first broke the records in prelims in 1:54.28. Smutny was the only swimmer to dip under 2 minutes

Kelley Heron, 17, won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.86. She swam a best time of 2:02.04 in prelims, dropping 0.41 and swam even faster at night to better her previous time by 1.59 seconds.

Heron was also second in the 100-yard individual medley in 58.20 just behind Allison Kopas of Swim Fort Lauderdale in 58.03.

Melissa Marinheiro was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.09.

Luke Lezotte came up big in the 100-yard individual medley winning in 53.88 against a good field. Lezotte was also fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.95.

Marc Rojas won the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.69.

Ricardo Roche was third in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.69 just behind Pine Crest’s Patrick Groters, second in 1:50.00. Miguel Cancel of Gulliver who represents Puerto Rico in international swimming, won in 1:47.77. Roche was also third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.48.

Samuel Quintero was second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 28.81. Rafael Rodriguez was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.22.

In a showing of depth, SOFLO’s A and B relays tied for eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:15.18. The A relay was Ervin Marin, Marc Rojas, CJ Kopecki and Luke Lezotte. The B relay was Max Asnis, Luis Villanueva, Heath Brames and Juan Serna.

After winning the FGC Junior Olympics for the seventh consecutive year and eighth overall, SOFLO is going for a five-peat at seniors and so far are on track.

SOFLO is defending champions in combined and women’s. Last year was the fourth time SOFLO swimmers won the JOs and Seniors in the same season. It is also the fifth consecutive year SOFLO has hosted the FGC Senior Championships.

SOFLO has 57 swimmers competing in 318 individual events and relays.

A field of 600 swimmers is competing in the three-day meet which has attracted most of the Florida Gold Coast teams including Azura, Tamarac, AquaKids Sharks, Flying Fish, Jupiter Dragons, North Palm Beach, Gulliver, Lake Lytal Lightning, Swim Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton Swim Team, Wahoos of Wellington, Pine Crest, East Coast, Martin County, Coral Springs, Plantation, Miami Swimming and Metro Aquatics.
